Buddy Hield is a professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association. He plays shooting guard for the Indiana Pacers.

Chavano Rainer “Buddy” Hield was born in Freeport, the Bahamas on December 17, 1992, and has six brothers and sisters. His nickname comes from a character on the television show Married… with Children. Hield played high school basketball at Jack Hayward High School, where he led the team to a Grand Bahamas High School Championship. He was honored as an All-Bahamian Brand All Bahamian Selection.

He later attended Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, Kansas. During his time there, Hield helped lead the team to the National Association of Christian Athletes National Championship. He was recruited by many Division 1 collegiate programs but chose to play for the Oklahoma Sooners.

As a freshman, Hield was named the team’s Most Inspirational Player. As a sophomore, he was named second-team All-Big 12. He took a major step up in performance during his junior year, where he scored 17.4 points per game. He helped Oklahoma to the Sweet Sixteen and was named First Team All-Big 12 and Big 12 Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year. Although he could have chosen to declare for the draft, he decided to stay at Oklahoma and play his senior season of basketball.

During Hield’s senior season, he had a career-high 40-point game and led the nation in three-point shots. He averaged 25 points per game that season, in addition to 5.7 rebounds and two assists per game. He was again named First Team All-Big 12 and Big 12 Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year and he also won the John R. Wooden Award, Jerry West Award, and Oscar Robertson Trophy. He was named Naismith College Player of the Year, Sporting News College Player of the Year, and a consensus first-team All-American.

Hield was drafted by the New Orleans Pelicans. He started in 37 of the 57 games he played for the team and averaged 8.6 points per game, with 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. His best game was against the Indiana Pacers, where he recorded five 3-point shots and scored 21 points. The Pelicans traded him to the Sacramento Kings in February of that season.

He came off of the bench to score 16 points in his debut for the Sacramento Kings and scored a career-high of 30-points. While playing with the Kings that season, Hield averaged 13.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. During the 2017–18 season, he started in 12 of the 80 games he played in and was the team’s sixth man for most of the season. Hield averaged 20.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists that season. During the 2018–19 season, he started all 82 games and played in seven consecutive games where he scored more than 20 points. For the season, he averaged 20.7 points, five rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game.

Hield started 44 of the 72 games that he played in during the 2019–20 season with the Kings. He averaged 19.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and three assists per game and won the Three-Point Contest at the NBA All-Star Weekend that season as well. He played in every game of the 2020-21 season and averaged 16.6 points, 47 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game. Hield was traded to the Indiana Pacers during the 2021-22 season. During his time with the Kings in the 2021-22 season, he had averaged 14.4 points, four rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. After being traded, his stats would increase slightly, as he averaged 18.2 points, five rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game in his time with the Pacers.

In 2019, Hield launched the Buddy Hield Foundation, which has to date, been able to reach out to thousands of children. The Foundation strives to promote youth development through the sport of basketball. It raises funding to support events, projects, and educational programs that work towards these ends. The foundation donated almost half a million dollars to help fund Hurricane Dorian relief efforts and also teamed up with others for a $105,000 donation to UNICEF USA.

In 2020, the Buddy Hield Foundation filed a trademark application for “THE BUDDY HIELD FOUNDATION” and a logo which consists of two children along with the words “THE BUDDY HIELD FOUNDATION EST. 2019” for charitable fund-raising services and other associated charitable services.
