Cole Haan is an American brand selling men’s and women’s footwear and accessories. It serves markets globally with its headquarters in both New York City and Greenland, New Hampshire. The company is publicly listed and is one of the largest clothing retailers worldwide.
Since its inception in 1928, the company has switched hands several times, often under the stewardship of new management. Let’s look into the company’s history, retail stores, and trademarks.
Cole Haan Company History
Trafton Cole and Eddie Haan founded Cole Haan in 1928 in Chicago. The duo built the company on the premise of running a business with a reputation for craftsmanship, quality, service, and style. For over 90 years that the business has been operational, the company’s culture has maintained this spirit and goal.
The business started as a men’s footwear brand and was originally named Cole, Rood & Haan, before expanding into children’s and women’s products. After several years of successful operations, in 1975, a group of partners, led by George Denney, acquired the business. The new owners built upon the company’s foundations established by Cole and Haan for over a decade, transforming the relatively small label into a household name.
In 1982, Cole Haan launched a retail division comprised of 42 stores worldwide. By 1996, the company’s cumulative sales had hit nearly $70 million.
Nike, which observed how strongly the footwear brand was growing, acquired Cole Haan. The 1988 deal closed for $80 million. It also marked Nike’s first foray outside the athletic shoe business.
Cole Haan has a different market approach compared to its competition. While the competition depends on licensed designer labels to increase sales, Cole Haan focuses on building its own brand.
Therefore, the company has expanded its brand into sandals, flats, pumps, and other formal and casual styles. It also offers branded leather accessories such as briefcases, handbags, wallets, and belts. Cole Haan also sells compatible products such as hosiery.
As part of expanding its product line, Cole Haan introduced a collection of driving shoes for European customers in 1996. This was part of its mid-90s drive to break into the European market. These driving shoes are one of the best-sellers for the brand on the continent. It was relaunched with longer-lasting materials, new colors, and softer leathers.
During this time, Cole Haan also introduced suede and fashion leather versions of the Anaconda chukka boots made for Europe. Cole Haan’s products were sold in more than 300 retail stores in Italy.
Despite an aggressive and successful expansion drive in the mid-90s, the late ’90s were rougher for the brand. Sales dipped, which led to layoffs and the company’s president resigning. Nike was also facing a rough patch with marketing and financial problems.
However, Cole Haan’s problems were thought to be different from Nike’s. Therefore, in 1998, several executives moved from Nike into the company to help bring the brand back on its feet.
The migrations also came with changes from Nike, with the parent brand repositioning Cole Haan in the market and introducing new footwear items featuring more modern styling. The brand also doubled down on its quality commitment.
This new market position was called “Modern Artisan” and was promoted by a lifestyle advertising campaign. The company pledged that 60 to 80% of product lines each year would feature new styles, with the remainder being a carryover of classic styles.
The goal was to be more appealing to the 30 to 50-year-old market segment the company was targeting.
This modern take on Cole Haan kicked off well, with product lines divided into several unique lifestyle collections, each appealing to a different set of consumers. Nike would divest Cole Haan in 2012, along with Umbro, in an attempt to focus the company’s efforts on the Nike brand.
Cole Haan Retail Stores
Cole Haan has over 300 stores, with most locations in the Americas, Middle East, and Asia. The company also has one store in Istanbul and South Africa, with the Istanbul store being the only location in Europe, with none in New Zealand or Australia.
However, international customers can still buy Cole Haan’s products through its website or websites operated by its international distribution partners.
Cole Haan also sells its products through retailers such as Nordstrom, Zappos, Shoe Carnival, Lord & Taylor, Macy’s, Hudson’s Bay Company, and Neiman Marcus.
Cole Haan Trademarks
Cole Haan has sought or obtained federal trademark registration for about 31 trademarks. These include “PINCH HAND SEWN,” “CHANGE FORWARD,” and “FLOWERFOAM.”
On April 5, 2016, Cole Haan obtained federal trademark registration for “PINCH HAND SEWN” and uses the trademark for its footwear, including boots, shoes, pumps, sneakers, slippers, and sandals.
Cole Haan sought federal trademark registration for “CHANGE FORWARD” on December 14, 2021. The company intends to use the trademark for its footwear, retail, and online services.
