Dr. Dre, a rapper and now entrepreneur, has multiple trademark applications for his headphones which are called “BEATS.” Since entering the market with the headphones, Dr. Dre’s company has been busy making claims to third parties that it owns the rights to the trademark BEATS in the music space.  Trademark attorney Josh Gerben tells the Wall Street Journal that the claims being made by Dr. Dre and his company are pushing the limits of the protections provided under United States trademark law.

Josh Gerben was quoted by the Wall Street Journal on rapper Dr. Dre’s trademarks.

Josh Gerben, a trademark attorney in Washington, D.C. who is not involved in any litigation connected with Beats Electronics or Sony, said Beats Electronics appears to be overreaching to go after companies “using the word ‘beats’ in a portion of a trademark containing other words for music related goods/services,” he said in an e-mail.
