The New York Times and Josh Gerben Speak About the Trump Airport Trademarks

The Trump Organization recently filed trademark applications with the United States Trademark Office to protect his name for an airport.

Josh Gerben explains why this is an unprecedented legal move.

When other airports were named after political figures, it was usually years after the person left office, or even after they passed away. And when other airports are named, a public authority or government agency almost always handles the trademark process, according to Josh Gerben, a trademark lawyer who discovered the Trump filings.

“The fact pattern here is unusual, to say the least,” said Mr. Gerben, who added that he gave “kudos to the person who filed this trademark. It’s very thorough.” He notes that the trademarks could provide a money making opportunity for the Trump Org, through licensing of the marks.
