CNBC Quotes Josh Gerben on Puma’s Opposition to Tiger Woods’ Sun Day Red Logo
Puma recently filed legal documents with the USPTO to block the registration of the logo for Sun Day Red, the new Tiger Woods brand. Puma claims that Sun Day Red’s “leaping feline” is too similar to its own “leaping cat” logo, which will confuse consumers.
CNBC discussed the potential outcome of the legal challenge with trademark attorney Josh Gerben.
“Puma’s challenge is significant,” said Josh Gerben.
“This is a real fight,” said Gerben, whose firm is not involved in the Puma lawsuit. “Any time you have open litigation you can lose. I think Puma has a legitimate case.”
It is possible that the two parties could reach a settlement before September 2026, when the case is likely to go trial.
“Disputes over logos are much less common than trademark disputes over names or slogans,” said Gerben. “Tiger certainly has a target on his back. He’s big enough to move markets.”
