Willard Carroll Smith Jr. was born in 1968. He was raised by his mother, a school board administrator, and his father, a U.S. Air Force veteran. He has three siblings. After attending Our Lady of Lourdes elementary school he went to Overbrook High School.

Smith’s first foray into music was with his long-time friend and turntablist Jeffrey “DJ Jazzy Jeff” Townes and beatboxer Clarence “Ready Rock C” Holmes. Word Up Records released their single “Girls Ain’t Nothing but Trouble” in 1986. The single became a hit right before Smith’s high school graduation. Their first album, titled Rock the House, was released by Jive Records in 1987. Their second studio album was titled, He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper (1988). Its most significant single was “Parents Just Don’t Understand” which reached the twelfth spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The third studio album from DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince was And in This Corner… (1989), which received two Grammy Awards nominations. The fourth studio album, Homebase (1991) contained their most popular single, “Summertime.” It won a Grammy Award for Best Single.

In 1990, NBC approached Will Smith with the opportunity to star in the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The television show was very successful and lasted for six seasons from 1990 until 1996. Smith won two Golden Globes for the show and the show was nominated for a total of seven NAACP Image Awards and three Kids’ Choice Awards. The show served as Smith’s vehicle into the acting world.

Smith’s first major movie roles were in Six Degrees of Separation (1993), Bad Boys (1995), and as part of the ensemble cast in Independence Day (1996). All of these movies were commercially successful and helped to propel him to even further fame. In the summer of 1997, he starred in Men in Black and also recorded the film’s theme song. The song was also on Big Willie Style, Smith’s first solo album. The album had three top ten singles. His second studio album came with the release of the film Wild Wild West (1999) and was titled Willennium. It’s top single was “Will 2K.”

In 2001, he starred in the biopic Ali. He released his third studio album in 2002, called Born to Reign. The top single was “Black Suits Comin’ (Nod Ya Head),” and was the theme for his movie Men in Black II (2002). He starred in a string of box office hits, including Bad Boys II (2003), Shark Tale (2004), and I, Robot (2004). His album Lost and Found was released in 2005 with the lead single, “Switch.” He starred with his son Jaden in the movie The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) and his daughter Willow appeared in his hit film I Am Legend (2007). Smith also starred in Hancock (2008), Men in Black 3 (2012), After Earth (2013), Focus (2015), Concussion (2015), Suicide Squad (2016), Collateral Beauty (2016), Bright (2017), and Aladdin (2019). In 2020, he reprised his role from the Bad Boys franchise in the new installment, Bad Boys for Life. He is also expected to star in the film Emancipation.
