LeapFrog Enterprises, Inc. was co-founded by California lawyer Michael Wood when he could not find useful learning resources to help his three-year-old son learn how to read in the late 1980s. Wood began researching phonics and marketing while continuing with his busy technology law practice, and by 1995 had developed a prototype that would become the Phonics Desk.
In 1994, Wood left his law firm and, with partner Robert Lally, founded LeapFrog with $800,000 in seed money from family, friends and former clients. Today, the company designs, develops and markets technology-based learning products and learning content to help educate children of all ages. The company owns more than 50 pending trademark applications and active federal trademark registrations.
LeapFrog History
With his prototype and seed money in hand, Wood started production on LeapFrog’s first product, the Phonics Desk. This first product used a Texas instrument chip a former client of Wood used in a talking greeting card. In addition, he consulted with noted American educational psychologist and Stanford education professor Robert Calfee.
When a child pressed a letter on the Phonics Desk, it would make the sound of the letter, helping the child learn letter pronunciation. Following focus groups with mothers and Calfee’s suggestions, Wood found a buyer at Toys “R” Us and a manufacturer in China, and the educational toy company was born.
Production Challenges, Sales Growth
LeapFrog raced its first product into production, aiming to hit the critical Christmas shopping market. However, when the first products arrived after shipping from China in containers, co-founder Lally tested the first batch and found them defective. During shipping, heat in the containers caused the mylar sheets below the letters to warp and malfunction.
Desperate, the partners had to air freight the products back to China to be fixed and returned to the U.S., reshipped and on the shelf for Christmas shoppers. Lesson learned.
Wood’s gamble paid off. By 1997, the company had distribution in 10 countries and substantial U.S. clients. In 2000, retailing for $49.99, the laptop-like educational LeapPad became the best-selling toy product and, at the end of 2001, had sold 8.2 million units. By 2002, LeapFrog reached $520 million in sales with several educational learning products, including its bestselling LeapPad learning device.
Big-Name Investors, IPO, and Founder Exit
After three years of operating successfully, big-name investors junk-bond king Michael Milliken and Larry Ellison of Oracle fame bought a majority interest in LeapFrog for $50 million. Then, through their educational holding company, Knowledge Universe Inc., the duo took the company public in July 2002, raising $115 million in the biggest IPO of the year. As a result, leapFrog became the third-largest U.S. toymaker, bigger than Mattel, according to Fast Company.
Former Mattel and Sega executive Tom Kalinske joined the company as CEO and Chairman, bringing 30 years of toy industry knowledge and contacts. Major retailers like FAO Schwarz, Walmart, Toys “R” Us, and Target carried LeapFrog products, and the growth trajectory continued with its products now sold in 25 countries.
By 2004, Wood was ready to move on. “In 2003, we had 1,000 employees, $650 million in revenue, $60 million in earnings and I had a headache every day. There would be four or five problems on my desk every day that had no good answer—you had to pick the least worst answer,” he told the Wall Street Journal.
New Products, Acquisition, New Directions
The company discontinued its LeapPad and launched a new flagship product called the Tag Reading System in June 2008. It followed with its Leapster2 portable learning system and an educational handheld game console called Didj.
A new Leapster Explorer game console followed, evolving into a new LeapPad Explorer tablet computer in 2011. It featured a 5-inch touch screen, camera, microphone, downloadable apps and game cartridges. Targeted to older children, it also featured gameplay, learning apps and accompanying books and videos.
The innovations and new products continued. In 2014, the LeapReader electronic reading and writing system launched as well as the LeapBand, a wearable activity tracker for kids. The same year it also released the LeapTV and added the LeapFrog Epic, an Android learning tablet in 2015.
In April 2016, Hong Kong-based Vtech, a global manufacturer of cordless phone products and other electronics products, acquired the company. LeapFrog remains a division of the overseas owner.
LeapFrog Notable Trademarks
LeapFrog’s innovative learning products with a federal trademark registration include Twist and Shout (learning binoculars), Fridge Phonics (magnetic letters), Learn & Groove (infant toys), Math Circus (DVDs), Talking Words Factory (spelling and grammar DVDs), Mr. Pencil (learning software), Cha-Cha Chicken (game software), LeapSearch (internet access software), and the LeapBand (children’s wearable activity tracker).
Among its pending trademark registrations are Mr. Pencil’s and Scribble & Write (electronic handheld game consoles), LeapBuilders (electronic action toys), and LeapFrog Academy (downloadable software for mobile devices).
LeapFrog looks like it will continue to grow, leaping ahead in the educational toy, technology-based learning and educational content market worldwide.
