Baby Einstein grew into an enormously popular American franchise in just five years after launching in 1996. Former high school English and art teacher and stay-at-home mom Julie Aigner-Clark (now Julie Clark) started the company in the basement of her Lone Tree, Colorado, home.
Frustrated by a lack of educational resources for her 18-month-old daughter, she started creating educational videos in her home basement. She created the first Baby Einstein video with a borrowed video camera, a few puppets, a dose of creativity and a shoestring budget. The VHS videos introduced infants and toddlers to music, art, poetry and foreign languages on videos she shot, edited and added recorded music by herself.
Five years later, in November 2001, Clark sold Baby Einstein to the Disney Company for a reported $25 million. In October 2013, Kids II, Inc (DBA Kids2), an Atlanta, Georgia-based toy and product manufacturer, acquired the Baby Einstein from Disney. The company currently has 32 pending or registered trademarks.
Baby Einstein Company History
After a year of Clark producing videos herself and spending more than $15,000, she set out to the annual toy industry trade show in New York to find a retailer willing to sell her educational videos.
A sympathetic retailer bought 100 videos and quickly sold them out within two days. The Baby Einstein idea was born and ready to grow up and mature fast.
Clark began producing and selling more popular educational videos with help from her husband and a small staff. In the early days, the videos focused on toys, hand puppets, numbers, and colorful shapes, all set to classical music and designed to entertain and supposedly educate infants and toddlers up to age four.
Prime Time, Kids Time
As early sales grew through word-of-mouth and endorsements from parents and teachers, the company reached sales of $1 million in 1998. That year, the company released its Baby Mozart video, which won awards for best video from Parenting Magazine and top-selling video by Specialty Retailer Magazine.
Clark decided to rename the business The Baby Einstein Company in October 1997 and obtained its first federal trademark in January 1999.
Baby Einstein added music C.D.s to its video product line and opened an online store on its website. In 1999, the company followed up with Baby Shakespeare and Baby Van Gogh video/book sets and later introduced a series of educational Discovery Cards.
Baby Einstein Growth, Sale to Disney
By 2000, Baby Einstein had grown fast, reaching sales of $10 million. Clark sold 20% of the company and distribution rights to Artisan Entertainment and Family Home Entertainment.
In November 2001, Clark sold her company to Disney for a reported $25 million. Under the Disney Company banner for the next 12 years, the Baby Einstein product line grew to include baby products, toys and party supplies. In addition, a preschool line and the Disney Channel T.V. program called Little Einsteins were launched in 2005.
The company stopped selling videos and expanded to DVDs in English, French and Spanish – even featuring sign language and titles including Baby Wordsworth (2005), Baby’s Favorite Places (2006), and My First Signs (2007).
By the end of the decade, Baby Einstein products were an international sales success, selling in more than 30 countries and 25 languages. Disney continued to produce more than 25 best-selling DVDs, expanding into non-classical, folk music C.D.s and adding a New Discovery Kit Collection designed to help babies discover the world.
Maturity, Controversy & Sale to Kids II
The Baby Einstein Company earned more than 20 awards from parent, educational and retail organizations, and sales hit $400 million under Disney’s stewardship.
Clark was named entrepreneur of the year, won numerous other awards, appeared on the Oprah Show and was recognized by President George W. Bush in his 2007 State of the Union address.
But Baby Einstein also attracted controversy. In 2006, the activist group campaign for a commercial-free childhood (CCFC) filed and lost the U.S. Federal Trade Commission complaint. Nonetheless, many parents passionately believed in Baby Einstein’s educational impact. The media reported a study showing that one-third of households with babies between six months and two years old owned at least one Baby Einstein video in the U.S. Some parents also found the products to be ideal babysitters and toddler distractions.
Business Focus Today
In October 2013, the Baby Einstein brand was sold by Disney to Kids II, Inc., an Atlanta toy and kids product manufacturer. The company continues to produce Baby Einstein branded educational toys, play gyms and mats, video and music streaming products, and books for babies and toddlers.
With more than 500 products, Kids2 continues to build the Baby Einstein brand and sell a wide range of other baby products and brands through franchise and affiliate partners worldwide.
Baby Einstein Notable Trademarks
The Baby Einstein brand was first registered in January 1999 for goods and services, including “audiovisual and audio programming designed to stimulate the learning capabilities of infants and young children, namely, pre-recorded videotapes, videodiscs, DVDS, CD-ROMS, audio cassettes, and audio C.D.s, all featuring music, natural sounds, spoken words, photographic images and graphic images.”
Products with federal trademark registrations include digital board books and Discovery Kit video and audio recordings. Other long-held trademarks include Baby Neptune, Baby Galileo, Baby Mozart, Baby Beethoven, Baby Bach, and Baby Van Gogh.
Reflecting product trends, the newest applications for trademark registration include traditional baby toys and products and new digital products and services. Trademark registrations applied for include Confidence Development, Real-World Learning, Open-Ended Experiences, Multi-Sensorial Engagement, Creative Thinking Stimulation, The Einstein Way, and Einstein Explorers.
Also pending is the trademark registration for Kids2, and under its direction, the Baby Einstein brand remains popular with children and parents and will likely continue to grow and mature.
