Tampa Bay Lightning Trademarks

The Tampa Bay Lightning, sometimes known as the “Bolts,” compete in the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference of the NHL. The team was founded in 1992 and has never changed its home city. This franchise has won two Stanley Cup championships, most recently in the 2020 abbreviated season (due to COVID-19). The team also has the longest tenured active head coach in the NHL, who has served in his position from 2013.
The original jerseys were simple black shoulders and white jerseys. The two original logos were used from 1992 to 2007, and they were black and white lightning bolts with blue accents, one of which is the outline of Florida. The new logo in 2007 was updated to be more modern, it lost the drop shadow and incorporated more of the now prominent blue color. The jerseys also feature the more prominent blue color, as both their home and away jerseys are now blue and white, and only the alternate jersey features black.
In addition to registering trademarks for both old logos and the new logos, the franchise has spent the past five to ten years filing for phrases, such as “Be the Thunder” and “Kick Ice,” its youth sports programs, both logos and “Lightning Made,” and its new gaming team, “Bolts Gaming.”
However, like many teams, the Lightning have gaps in their trademark portfolio. The Lightning mascot is a lightning bug named ThunderBug, and the team has yet to protect the image or the name. The team has also not filed for any trademarks related to their win in the bubble, which could open them up to problems if someone else tries to file for trademarks like “Bring the Thunder,” which was similar to their previous “Be the Thunder” phrase.
