Seattle Kraken Trademarks
January 16, 2021
The Seattle Kraken is the newest NHL team, only having joined the league in the Pacific Division in the Western Conference in time for the 2021-2022 season. The NHL approved the expansion proposal in December 2018, and fans were kept in suspense until July 2020 when the branding was revealed. In addition to a new team, the team is going to play in a completely new stadium: a $930 million Climate Pledge Arena, built on the site of the former KeyArena.
The Kraken is not the first team to play in Seattle. The first team, the Seattle Metropolitans, played in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association, and was the first United States-based team to win the Stanley Cup. This league then folded in 1924. The second team to play in Seattle was the Seattle Totems, who played from 1944 until 1975.
Seattle was nearly awarded an expansion team in 1976, but the current expansion teams were underperforming, and the city rescinded the offer. A second bid was made for an expansion in 1990, and the small group was unable to meet the financial demands of the NHL. From 2012 onward, the NHL’s interest in Seattle rose as the city was becoming a more reliable city for a team. The plans in February of 2012 to build a new stadium for the SuperSonics, further intrigued the league.
When analyzing the trademark portfolio of the Kraken, you can see that the team had filed for many variations of team names: the Seattle Sockeyes, the Seattle Summits, and the Seattle Breakers. These were all filed the same day as the team’s actual name, leading to the question: will the team extend their ability to file proof of use and keep the registrations active?
The team also filed for a RELEASE THE KRAKEN mark, but soon after, withdrew the application. Read more about why the team might have done this here.
