The Pittsburgh Penguins, sometimes known as just the “Pens,” play in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference. The club was approaching bankruptcy in 1999 but was bought out by the current owners, one of whom was once a Pittsburgh Penguins player. The Penguins were another expansion team in the 1967 expansion, and they have won the most Stanley Cup championships outside of the Original Six.
Despite the popularity of the Pens now, in the first years of its existence, the stadium was consistently at less than 50% capacity. The player, Mario Lemieux, joined the Pens in 1984 and began to attract fans to the franchise. The franchise steadily grew after Sidney Crosby joined the team, who was the first overall pick by the Pens in the 2005 NHL Draft.
The Penguins logo is a penguin playing hockey in front of a golden triangle. The golden triangle represents Downtown Pittsburgh, as it is bounded by two rivers and forms a pointed landmass that looks like a triangle.
The Penguins have one of the most robust trademark portfolios of the NHL teams. Not only have they registered trademarks for their logos, their names, and their mascot, but they have also registered nicknames like “Iceburgh” (a play on Pittsburgh) and discount ticket programs such as “Student Rush.” The franchise has also protected its domain for purchasing merchandise and “Pensgear” for the merchandise itself. Most of the other teams could benefit from similar protections and should use the Pens as a model for adequate intellectual property protections.
