The Philadelphia Flyers play in the NHL’s Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference. The Flyers were added to the NHL in 1967 and were the first non-Original Six team to win the Stanley Cup, with the first win coming in 1974. The Flyers are also the most successful non-Original Six team with regards to the conference finals since they have played in twenty-four and won eight.
The Flyers have a rich history of rivalries and have even been known for the spirit of the team. The rivalries include the New York Rangers and Islanders, the Boston Bruins, the Washington Capitals, the New Jersey Devils, and possibly most heated, is the Pittsburgh Penguins. Clearly, the Flyers have made enemies across the league, and as the Flyers started to gain traction, they garnered the nickname of the Broad Street Bullies. The team’s rink is on Broad Street, so that part of the nickname is self-explanatory. The Bullies portion, however, comes from the clash with Atlanta in 1973 when the team took a win 3-1. This era of the franchise was known for their brute force and their success, winning two Stanley Cups in consecutive years.
Unfortunately, the Flyers have failed to file trademarks for their recent and nationally controversial mascot, Gritty. The Gritty mascot was unveiled on September 24, 2018 and was revealed to be a 7-foot tall furry orange “creature” with large unblinking eyes. Gritty is so popular he has made his way onto the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and was described by The Guardian as an “acid trip of a mascot.” Naturally, this creature should be protected since his image is so popular and the Flyers should soon take steps to protect his image and name for at least merchandise and public appearance.
