The Montreal Candiens, formally known as le Club de hockey Canadien, and most informally known as the Habs, are Montreal’s NHL team. The team plays in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The Canadiens were founded in 1909, which makes them the only existing NHL club to predate the NHL’s founding and makes them the longest continuously operating professional ice hockey team.
The Habs nickname comes from Les Habitants, a nickname the team has in the region’s French Canadian. The Canadiens last won the Stanley Cup in 1993, and they have the most Stanley Cup franchise wins with an amazing total of 24, 23 of which were since the league was officially founded.
In addition to the French nicknames, the Canadiens have historically operated in both English and French – the public address announcements, the social media outlets, and the first stanza of O Canada are all in French as well as English. This combination of the languages lends itself well to the CH logo, where an H is nestled within the curve of the C. However, it is reportedly a misconception that the H in the logo stands for Habitants, and apparently, it actually stands for Hockey.
Despite the early founding, the Canadiens did not file a trademark in the United States until 1973. Within the first month, the team filed for the CH logo, and the CANADIENS word mark. Possibly because the primary residence of the team is in Canada, their American trademark portfolio is lacking. The team has filed for interesting marks, such as YOUPPI!, which is the French translation for Yippee! and also the name of the team’s mascot.
The team also has recently launched its global campaign to unite all Canadiens’ fans worldwide. The campaign is dubbed “Unite the Faithful,” and those who wish to participate will join “Club 1909.” Both phrases registered as trademarks in 2018.
