The Detroit Red Wings are the NHL team in Detroit and currently play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The Red Wings were one of the original six teams in the league, but in 1926 they were known as the Detroit Cougars. In the 1930-1932 seasons, the team was known as the Detroit Falcons, and ultimately became the Detroit Red Wings in 1932. As of 2020, the Red Wings have won the most Stanley Cups out of any of the US-based teams.
The Red Wings’ jerseys’ have ultimately been the same throughout the whole franchise, and the team has remained red and white with the opposing color as piping. The most noticeable difference in their jersey design over time is that the word ‘Detroit’ was replaced with the winged wheel logo. This winged wheel logo was created when the team’s name was changed after James Norris bought the Detroit Red Wings. Norris had played on the Montreal AAA Winged Wheelers Canadian hockey team – and that league featured a winged wheel logo. The team filed to register trademarks for both the name “Red Wings” and the logo in 1969.
Due to their success and longevity in Detroit, the city has been nicknamed Hockeytown, and the franchise registered the phrase as a trademark in 1998. Despite the franchise’s small trademark portfolio, the team has capitalized on the Hockeytown moniker and registered trademarks for Hockeytown Cafe, Hockeytown Authentics, and a spin-off HockeyHeaven.
