The Colorado Avalanche plays in the Central Division of the Western Conference of the NHL. They are the only team in the “Central Division” not located in the “Central Time Zone.” The team was founded in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques and joined the NHL in 1979 after the NHL-WHA merger. They were relocated to Denver after the 1994-95 season. Their first season in Denver, the Avalanche won their first of two Stanley Cup Championships.
The primary logo is composed of a burgundy letter A with snow coming down like an avalanche, designed to look like a C. If you look closely, at the bottom of the snow if a hockey puck. From 1995-2015, the team had an alternate logo that was the foot of Bigfoot, and it was placed on the shoulders of their jerseys. After 2015, the new alternate logo is the CO taken from the state’s flag, overtop a silhouette of a mountain, recolored to match the team’s jerseys. All three of these logos have been protected by the franchise – the primary A logo filed in 1995, the secondary Bigfoot logo filed in 2002, and the CO logo filed in 2015.
Since the team is relatively new, and they have only made the Stanley Cup once since moving to Denver, they do not have any phrases or other words registered for a trademark. The one word the team did file for in 2018 is “Avs” since that is their well-known nickname. However, the franchise is missing out on the opportunity to trademark its mascot – Bernie the St. Bernard – who has represented the team since 2009.
