The Carolina Hurricanes are an NHL team that plays in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference. However, the team was originally formed in 1971 in New England as the “Whalers,” and they participated in the World Hockey Association. In 1979, when the NHL merged with the WHA, the team became the Hartford Whalers, and left Boston after too many scheduling conflicts with the Boston Bruins. The Hurricanes as they are known today came to be in 1997 when they moved to Raleigh North Carolina. The Canes, as their also known, have won one Stanley Cup Championship in the 2005-06 season. This was North Carolina’s first ever major professional sports championship title.

The Canes current trademark portfolio is limited to its existence after 1997. Before then, the trademarks were owned by the New England Whalers Hockey Club and was limited to the team’s name. All the marks owned by the individual club have expired, but the NHL has registered two marks that are still live. The NHL registered the work mark as well as the logo, both for clothing, and presumably use the marks on vintage hockey attire. The marks have only recently been registered, as they were filed in 2018.

The first Hurricanes-specific trademark was filed in 1997, as the franchise secured its name. In addition to the name, the team did not hesitate to file its primary and secondary logos the same year. The primary logo is a stylized hurricane and is relatively unchanged to this day. The secondary logo features a hockey stick as the pole of a storm warning flag and has been used as a patch on the uniform’s shoulder. Since a hurricane does not make the best mascot, the team resorted to “Stormy the Ice Hog.” The Canes have also registered his image for entertainment services, but they have not yet registered his female counterpart, “Caroline the Ice Hog.”
