The Boston Bruins are Boston’s NHL team who plays as a member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The Bruins are the third oldest active team in the NHL, the oldest in the US, and one of the Original Six NHL teams, tracing its existence back to 1924. The Bruins have one six Stanley Cup championships, which is fourth most of any team.
In 1924, the NHL expanded into the United States, and Charles Adams became the first owner of an American NHL franchise. Adams directed Art Ross to come up with a nickname that would portray “an untamed animal displaying speed, agility, and cunning.” Ross decided that Bruins, which is an Old English word for brown bear, was appropriate. In addition, the name matched perfectly with the team’s original uniform colors – brown and yellow – based upon Adams’ grocery store chain, First National Stores. The brown and gold began changing, and in the 1934-35 season, the Bruins replaced the brown with black – creating the black and gold we see today.
Since 1948, the team has had the same B logo – a black and gold spoked wheel with the “B” in the center. The most recent variation of this logo was created in 2007, and this is also one of the last trademarks that the Bruins have filed.
The Bruins have filed very few trademarks for a franchise with such a long history, and that goes to show how consistent their branding and imagery has been. However, the team has some holes in their intellectual property protection, including the Bruins’ mascot – Blades the Bruin.
