The Arizona Coyotes are a professional ice hockey team based in Phoenix, and they play as a member of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the NHL. However, in 2021, when the Seattle Kraken enter the league, the Coyotes will move back to the Central Division. The Coyotes were founded in 1971 as the Winnipeg Jets in the World Hockey Association. However, after the WHA folded, they were one of only four franchises absorbed into the NHL in 1979. The Jets moved to Phoenix in 1996 and were officially renamed to the Coyotes. The Coyotes are known for unstable ownership, and at one point the team was even owned by the NHL.

When it came time to name the team, a public team-naming vote was held. The Coyotes beat out the Scorpions in the finals, as both were inhabitants of the Sonoran Desert in Arizona. The first trademark the team filed for was in 1996 after its move, and it was for the team name the “Phoenix Coyotes.” At this time, the team filed for a Southwestern stylized coyote face, a crescent moon, and the full Southwestern style coyote wielding a hockey stick.

In 2003, the team filed for a more realistic coyote head howling from the side. This logo is the team’s current logo and features the burnt red color prominent on the jerseys. The jerseys also feature a shoulder patch that is the outline of Arizona with the shorthand “AZ” and a stylized sunrise.

In addition to trademarks for the logos, the team has taken extra steps to trademark playoff phrases in 2017, such as “Own the Desert,” and more recently, in 2020, “Rally the Valley,” “Back in Black,” and “Howl Yeah.”
