The Baltimore Ravens are a professional, American football team based in Baltimore, Maryland. The Ravens were established in 1996 by Art Modell, former owner of the Cleveland Browns, after his failed attempt to relocate the Browns to Baltimore. The Ravens compete in the National Football League’s AFC North division.
The name “Ravens” was chosen by fans, who picked the name through a voting contest. Fans based their decision on many reasons, a few being: the dark, ominous and tough raven bird, Edgar Allen Poe’s poem The Raven (Poe was a resident of Baltimore in his early career), and the fans believed that the raven would tie-in nicely with other teams in the area, such as the Baltimore Orioles.
The Baltimore Ravens name, however, did not originally belong to the football team. The name Baltimore Ravens was for a wheelchair basketball team in the 1970’s. The naming rights were then sold to the football team in the 1990’s. The wheelchair team changed their name to the Maryland Ravens.
The first trademark registration obtained by the football team was for the name “Baltimore Ravens” on July 28, 1998. Following that application, the Ravens then filed for various logos and for their uniform design. Like other NFL teams, the Ravens have been modest with their trademark filings, mostly filing only for their name, associated logos, and any charitable efforts.
Their most recent filing was made in April 2018 for their “foam finger”, which has not yet been registered due to issues with submitting an acceptable specimen to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
