The Houston Rockets began as the San Diego Rockets in 1967 and moved to Houston in 1971. When the team first started, they only won 15 games in their first season, and the team did not have a winning record until the 1976-1977 season! In fact, the team was so good at being bad, the Rockets were the first team to make it to the NBA Finals with a losing record – 40 wins, 42 losses. Eventually, the Houston Rockets improved and went on to win four Western Conference titles and 2 NBA Championships.

Their logo has consistently been centered on their name, and it started with a rocket streaking by a basketball and the team name. The San Diego Rockets were green and yellow, but upon moving to Houston became red and yellow. In 1972, upon the move to Houston, the team changed the logo to be a gold basketball with two red trails, and the “Rock” in Rockets capitalized. This color scheme became fondly known as the “ketchup and mustard.”

In 1995, the Rockets wanted to modernize their look, so the team held a competition and received over 5,000 entries. The team began using the winning logo but did not credit or compensate the winner, who then filed a breach of contract suit against the Rockets. Not surprisingly, the team did not register the winner’s logo as their trademark. Instead, the Rockets decided to fit in with other teams in the 90s and created and registered a cartoon rocket logo.

The most recent trademark, created for the 2003-2004 season, is the simple R with the uprights of the R looking like the jet stream of a rocket launch. The rocket-themed lettering became a custom typeface for the whole team.
