The Orlando Magic, aptly named for the team’s proximity to Disney World, has played in the NBA Eastern Conference Southeast Division since 1989. When the team was being founded, the city hosted a name-the-team contest, and the winner was actually “the Challengers.” Some of the other suggestions were Floridians, Juice, Orbits, Astronauts, and Aquamen, but the panel of judges in charge, decided to go with Magic. The team has not had much notable success, but the roster has held a very notable player – Shaquille O’Neal.
The Magic’s logo was a collaboration between suggestions, the team, and some Walt Disney artists. The first logo was MAGIC, with a star for the A, and stars on a basketball. The team filed a trademark for this logo in 1993, and it was registered in 1996. While some of the logo has changed, the affinity for the stars has never wavered.
As well as their logo, the team has protected their mascot and its name. The Magic mascot was born with the team, and his name is Stuff. He was a pun on “Puff the Magic Dragon.” Stuff was first debuted by the Philly Phanatic as he hatched out of an egg, since the mascots were both works for hire created by the same outside company. The Magic filed for trademarks for the “Stuff” wordmark and stylized “Stuff” in 1994 for clothes, stuffed animals, and personal appearances by the mascot.
Since its founding, the team has not changed or added much to their trademark portfolio, but they did update the logo in 1999. The major logo change came in 2010 where the word “Magic” is no longer curved, and this is the logo we still see today.
