Sam Smith is an award-winning singer and songwriter. They are best known for their singles “Stay with Me” (2014), “Too Good at Goodbyes” (2017), and “Dancing with a Stranger” (2019).
Samuel Frederick Smith was born in London, England on May 19, 1992. They were raised by their parents Fred Smith and Kate Cassidy in Great Chishill, Cambridgeshire, where they performed with British Youth Music Theatre. They attended St Mary’s Catholic School in Bishop’s Stortford and studied singing and songwriting under the tutelage of jazz pianist, Joanna Eden. They were part of the Bishop’s Stortford Junior Operatics and Cantate Youth Choir.
They released two relatively unheard singles before being featured on Disclosure’s “Latch” in 2012. Smith released their first EP, Nirvana in 2014. The first promotional single off the album was “Lay Me Down” and it peaked at 46 on the UK Charts. The next single was “Safe with Me” followed by “Nirvana.”
Smith released their first studio album in 2014, titled In the Lonely Hour. The album rose to number two on the Billboard Hot 200 and all the way to number one on the UK Charts. The album produced three hit singles, “Money on My Mind,” “Stay with Me,” and “I’m Not the Only One.” The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year.
Their first appearance on American television was on the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show, where they performed “Latch” with Disclosure and then performed on Saturday Night Live just a couple of months later. They performed the song “Stay With Me” during the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.
Smith, along with Jimmy Napes, composed the theme song for Spectre (the 24th installment of the Bond series). The song was titled “Writing’s on the Wall ” and received a Guinness World Record for being the first Bond theme to reach number one on the UK Charts and an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Smith released The Thrill of It All, their second studio album in 2017 and it debuted at the top of the charts in both the UK and the United States. The lead single “Too Good at Goodbyes” debuted at number one in the UK and number five in the United States. The album also contained the singles “One Last Song,” “Pray,” “Baby, You Make Me Crazy,” and “Burning.” They supported the album with an international tour that included Europe, North America, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.
They released the number one single, “Dancing with a Stranger” with Normani in 2019 and another single “How Do You Sleep?” Originally these were meant to be promotional songs for their third studio album, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the release of the album was held up and changes were made to its lineup. Smith released their third studio album Love Goes in 2020. The album won a GLAAD Media Award for outstanding Musical Artist. Since that time, Smith has released several singles and a live album, Love Goes: Live at Abbey Road Studios.
Sam Smith established Sam Smith World Limited, which is an umbrella company that oversees all their business interests. Sam Smith World Limited obtained a federal trademark registration for the name “SAM SMITH” in 2015 to cover musical sound and video recordings, CDs, multimedia software, DVDs, electronic publications, and more. It also applies to printed materials like musical posters, photographs, stationary, and books and magazines about music or musicians as well as stickers, decals, and like items. The registration also covers use with retail stores, both online and brick and mortar, specifically those selling goods and services related to Sam Smith. It also applies to clothing items like tops, bottoms, jerseys, jackets, footwear and more. In addition, the registration covers entertainment services, specifically live musical performances, concerts and videos, as well as recording studio services, music publishing, and non-downloadable digital music.
Sam Smith World Limited also obtained a federal trademark registration for “SAM SMITH WORLD” to cover all of the same uses in 2015. The company also applied for a federal trademark registration for a logo to cover all of the same uses. This logo features two interlocking “S”, and represents Sam Smith’s initials.
In 2021, Sam Smith World filed a trademark application for “SAM SMITH WORLD” to be used with musical sound recordings such as music videos, tapes and cassettes, computer games, arcade games and downloadable music online as well as others. The application covers printed materials like books, magazines, posters, and similar items. It also applies to clothing like hats, jackets and footwear, as well as retail store services both online and in person. Additionally it covers entertainment services, television programs, publication of books and other similar items. Sam Smith World also filed a trademark application for the double “S” logo for the same purposes.
