Halsey is an award-winning singer and songwriter, who is known for her distinctive voice. She has sold more than a million records and has been streamed more than six billion times in the United States alone.

Ashley Nicolette Frangipane is of Hungarian, Irish, Italian, and African American ancestry and was born in Edison, New Jersey in 1994. Her mother is an EMT and her father manages a car dealership. They held many jobs and moved often when she was a child causing her to change schools frequently. She was raised with her two younger brothers, who remember her as being a musically inclined child. She played several instruments in her youth including violin, viola, cello, and guitar. She attended Warren Hills Regional High School, where she graduated in 2012. After graduating high school, she attended both community college and Rhode Island School of Design briefly.

In 2012, she began writing songs while staying in New York and took her stage name, Halsey, from a street where she had stayed as a teenager. She gained popularity by posting videos of her singing online to sites like Kik, YouTube, SoundCloud, and Tumbler. She posted a song called “Ghost” (which was a collaboration with another singer) and got the attention of several record labels. She signed with Astralwerk because she appreciated the level of creative freedom that they allow their artists.

Halsey’s first release was an EP called Room 93 (2014). It reached number three on the Top Heatseekers chart. She was the most-tweeted-about performer at South by Southwest in 2015. With this newfound popularity, she began touring with Young Rising Sons. In June of 2015, she was tapped to open for the Imagine Dragons Smoke + Mirrors Tour in North America.

Badlands (2015) was the debut studio album for Halsey. The album peaked at number two on the Billboard 200. It would eventually sell more than 2 million copies and be certified double platinum. “Castle,” “Colors,” “Ghost,” and “New Americana” were the top singles from the album and were all certified platinum. “Castle” is also featured in The Huntsman: Winter’s War (2016) soundtrack. She supported the album with the Badlands Tour (2015–16), as well as select openings for The Weeknd’s The Madness Fall Tour (2015). She was also a featured artist on Justin Bieber’s song “The Feeling” (2015).

Halsey partnered with MAC cosmetics in 2016 to work on their Future Forward line. That year, she also released a stand-alone single titled “Tokyo Narita (Freestyle)” and collaborated on “Hands”, which was a charity single (proceeds went to victims of the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting). She also co-wrote and provided vocals for “Closer” by The Chainsmokers. She released “Not Afraid Anymore” in January of 2017, which was part of the Fifty Shades Darker (2017) soundtrack.

In June of 2017, Halsey released her second studio album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and sold more than 100,000 copies in the first week. “Now or Never” was the lead single for the album and was released as a promotion ahead of the album itself. The song was a number one hit. Other singles from this album include “Eyes Closed,” “Strangers,” “Bad at Love,” and “Alone”. She also recorded “Him & I” (2017) with G-Eazy and “Love Is Madness” (2018) with Thirty Seconds to Mars. She was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live in 2018, performing “Bad at Love” as well as “Him & I” with G-Eazy. She was also on Benny Blanco’s track “Eastside.”

In 2018, she provided the voice for Wonder Woman in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies and appeared in Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born. After signing a deal with Capitol Records, she released “Without Me” (2018), which was her first solo number-one hit. She released several collaborative efforts, including “11 Minutes” with Yungblud, “Boy with Luv” with BTS, and “Earth,” which was a charity single for global warming awareness.

Her third studio album was released in 2020, called Manic. Singles from this album included “Nightmare,” “Graveyard,” “Clementine,” and “You Should Be Sad.” In 2020, she published her first book of poetry, I Would Leave Me If I Could, and released her first live album. The album was called Badlands (Live from Webster Hall). Her fourth studio album was announced on June 28, 2021, and is produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails fame. The album is titled If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power (2021).

Halsey has been busy in music and has few other business interests. She obtained a federal trademark registration for “Halsey” for entertainment services and prerecorded music online in 2016. She also obtained a federal trademark registration for “Halsey” to cover musical recordings in 2016. She currently resides in Calabasas, California and her net worth is believed to be around $20 million.
