Céline Dion is a world renowned Grammy-winning Canadian singer. Her records have sold over 200 million copies worldwide and she has won a plethora of awards. Some of her most famous songs include “Because You Loved Me” and “My Heart Will Go On” from the hit movie Titanic.

Céline Marie Claudette Dion was born in Charlemagne, Quebec to an already musical family. Dion wrote her first song when she was only twelve years old. A tape of her singing this song was sent to Canadian impresario René Angélil, who recognized the child’s talent right away. He became her manager and even mortgaged his own home to produce her first album.

Dion’s first album was an immediate success locally, which led her to compete in the Japanese 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival, netting several awards there. She was the first singer from Canada to have a gold record in France. She won the “Discovery of the Year” Felix Award and the “Best Female Performer” Felix Award and won the Eurovision Song Contest 1988, sang for Pope John Paul II, and toured Quebec, all by the time she was eighteen years old!

Inspired by Micheal Jackson, she decided that she wanted to be a star. Angélil devised a plan for Dion to take some time away from the spotlight. During this time, her appearance was polished, including a dental surgery, she took vocal training to withstand the rigors of performing and she took lessons to perfect her English language skills. She reemerged ready to conquer the musical world, and she did.

Céline Dion made her debut to the English speaking world in 1990. Her first album in English was called Unison. “Where Does My Heart Beat Now” was her first major hit in the United States. However her major breakthrough in the U.S. came with the release of the Disney animated film Beauty and the Beast title track, a duet with Peabo Bryson. The song was an award winning international hit and would be used as the lead single for her next album.

As Dion achieved great success in the English speaking world, she would be heavily criticized by her French speaking fans for making this change. She has continued to release albums in both English and French throughout her career, although she considers herself a French artist, even after the controversy.

Over time, Angélil had become far more than a manager to Dion and they had fallen in love. While she feared another controversy with her fans, she would be proven wrong as they fully embraced her romantic relationship with her longtime manager. The two would be married in a spectacular wedding in 1994, which aired on Canadian television.

Dion was a true musical superstar throughout the 1990s and 2000s, releasing albums in both French and English. She was awarded the Chopard Diamond Award, which is rarely awarded and is only given to artists who have sold more than 100 million records.

From 2003 until 2007 she showcased her trademark vocal power and skill in Las Vegas at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, which was designed especially for her show. Her residency was the most successful residency in history and it led to the release of the DVD Live in Las Vegas: A New Day… She would continue to tour and release albums through the end of the decade, returning again to Las Vegas for another three year stint in 2011.

In January of 2016, Angélil succumbed to cancer, leaving Dion heartbroken, as years later she has no desire to ever remarry or even date. She released a French language album that was a tribute to her late husband in May of that year. Since that time she has continued to tour and release successful albums and is scheduled to return again to a limited Las Vegas residency.

The majority of Dion’s wealth comes from her incredibly successful time in Las Vegas, but she does have other business ventures. She has filed trademarks for “CELINE DION” for her line of perfume, as well as for sunglasses, jewelry, handbags and other goods. It is worth noting that Dion is an international star and does own trademarks in several countries including Canada. While Dion has not faced a lot of issues with others using her trademarks, she has been accused of use of other’s property.

In 2002, a band from England called Muse would have sued Dion had she not decided to back down and change the name of her second Las Vegas show. As recently as July of 2021, a luxury brand, also called Celine, has threatened to bring a lawsuit against the singer.

Céline Dion still resides in Las Vegas with her three sons. Forbes estimates her net worth to be $460 million and named her to their America’s Self-Made Women 2021 list.
