Belcalis Almanzar, (best known by the name Cardi B), is an American Entertainer, a Rapper and a Social Media Personality. She was born on October 11, 1992 in The Bronx, New York. Her mother was Trinidadian, and her father was of Dominican descent. Cardi B spent most of her early age with her grandmother in neighboring Washington Heights. She attended Renaissance High School for Musical Theater & Technology. She is the first ever artist who has won the American Music Award for best Rap/Hip-Hop song several times, including her win for “Bodak Yellow” in 2018.
During her teenage years, Cardi B used to work at an Amish supermarket in Lower Manhattan. She got fired and then turned to stripping at the age of 19. She describes it as a good decision back then as she needed the money and through this, she was able to attend school. For her, stripping was a getaway from domestic violence and poverty. She stated that her name ‘Cardi B’ comes from the alcoholic beverage ‘Bacardi’. She started gaining publicity in 2013 through social media with her frank attitude discussing her life as a stripper. In 2015, she appeared on VH1’s reality show Love & Hip Hop: New York. In 2016, she made her musical debut on Shaggy’s “Boom Boom” single alongside dancehall singer Popcaan. She left VH1’s reality show Love & Hip Hop: New York in 2017, as she wanted to fully focus on her career in the music industry. The years 2017 and 2018 brought some great opportunities to Cardi B. She was recognized as a rising star and was nominated for ‘Best Female Hip-Hop Artist’ and ‘Best New Artist’ at the 2017 BET Awards.
In 2018, she signed with Atlantic Records and released her No. 1 single “Bodak Yellow”. The single reached the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 in September. It also made her the first solo female rapper to do so since 1998. In September 2017, Cardi B got married to Migos group member Offset. She did a collaboration with G-Eazy’s “No Limit,” Migos’ “MotorSport,” Puerto Rican sensation Ozuna’s”La Modelo”, which added to her success. She also released her second single “Bartier Cardi” later that year.
Cardi B was also nominated at the Grammy Awards for the ‘Best Rap Song’ and ‘Best Rap Performance’. She also collaborated with Bruno Mars on a performance ‘Finesse’ at a shoe in 2018. Cardi B was successful in gaining popularity with her hit singles and she also won the award for the ‘Top Rap Female Artist’ and received eight nominations for the 2018 Billboard Music Awards.
She released her long-awaited debut album, ‘Invasion of Privacy,’ in 2018, in collaboration with 21 Savage and Migos. The album was a hit and a breakthrough moment in her career. It attracted thousands of followers. The following year, she also enjoyed a great moment when her song “I Like It” from ‘Invasion of Privacy’ hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. This achievement made Cardi B the first female rapper to twice reach the top spot. In May 2018, Cardi B confirmed the rumors that she was pregnant, and she delivered a baby girl the following year.
In the year 2019, Cardi B collaborated on another single, ‘Please Me,’ with Bruno Mars and she received the ‘Best Rap Album Grammy’ for ‘Invasion of Privacy.’ In 2018, Cardi B was also featured in some very popular hits with Jennifer Lopez (“Dinero”) and Maroon 5 (“Girls Like You”). She appeared in the Billboard’s “You Should Know” series where she stated that the first albums she ever bought were by American entertainers Missy Elliott and Tweet, respectively. She also stated that her favorite American pop singers were Lady Gaga and Madona. She also received the album of the year award in 2019.
Cardi B has filed documents for six trademarks with the name ‘WAP’, including clothing products, headwear, and footwear. It also includes goods like beer, soft drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks, performance drinks, water beverages and more. She also filed documents for six trademarks with the name ‘CARDI B’.
