Bon Jovi (John Francis Bongiovi Jr.), born March 2, 1962, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, is an actor and a musician. He is recognized as the world’s best-selling music artist and the founder and lead singer of the rock band ‘Bon Jovi’. Bon Jovi was raised in New Jersey by his parents John and Carol Bongiovi. He was born in a middle-class family. His father was a hairdresser, and his mother was a florist. Bon Jovi spent most of his teenage years hanging out at clubs, having the dream to become a Rockstar one day. He attended St. Joseph High School but was not really interested in studies and spent most of his time playing music and recording at The Power Station (his cousin Tony’s recording studio). By the time Bon Jovi was 16, he started playing at various clubs, taking inspiration from the local rising stars such as the Asbury Jukes and Bruce Springsteen. He used to perform with various local bands such as The Lechers, The Rest and John Bongiovi and the Wild Ones.
Bon Jovi met David Bryan (a keyboardist) in high school and soon both formed a ten-piece rhythm and blues band called Atlantic City Expressway. In 1980, Jovi recorded his first single ‘Runaway’ at The Power Station (his cousin’s studio), this single was a success and got Jovi being noticed. Soon the band was recognized by a New Jersey studio and he signed his first deal which was the beginning of his tremendous journey. He joined hands with a bunch of musicians and formed his own band called ‘Bon Jovi’. The band included a bassist (Alec John Such), a drummer (Tico Torres) and a keyboardist (David Bryan). They released their first album ‘Bon Jovi’ in 1984.
The band released their second album ‘7800 Fahrenheit’ in 1985. The album was a hit and earned them a lot of fame, however, Bon Jovi still thought that they were still not able to get the attention they deserved. During this time Bon Jovi’s cousin Tony, the owner of The Power Station where Jovi begun his career journey, sued the band with the claim that he was the reason for the band’s success. The matter was settled later out of court. In 1986, the band released their breakout album ‘Slippery When Wet’. It was their third studio album and became a best-selling album, selling more than 28 million worldwide. Soon after, the band came up with another hit album “New Jersey”, the album got five top-10 hits on Billboard’s Hot-100.
In 1988, Bon Jovi made his debut in the movie ‘The Return of Bruno’, this marked the beginning of his career in the film industry. During this time, he also co-produced another album titled ‘Heart of Stone’. In 1989, Jovi married his high school sweetheart Dorothea Hurley at the Graceland Wedding Chapel. The couple has four children.
In the year 1990, Jovi also recorded a soundtrack for the movie ‘Blaze of Glory’. The band had some differences but got into releasing another album ‘Keep the Faith’ in 1992. The album was not able to perform well as compared to his other albums. In 1994, Jovi released his greatest hits album called ‘Cross Road’. He was successful in releasing his first solo album in 1997 with the name ‘Destination Anywhere’. The album was a hit, grabbing a lot of attraction. Jovi then continued to work in movies such as ‘Row Your Boat’, ‘Homegrown’, etc. The band reunited in the year 2000 and released their 7th album ‘Crush’. The album was a huge hit and won a Grammy award in the category of Best Rock Album. In 2012, Bon Jovi was ranked 31st by Hit Parader in the “Top 100 Heavy Metal Vocalists.” In the year 2011, Bon Jovi appeared in the movie ‘New Year’s Eve’ in which he played the role of a successful rock star. He also founded a charitable organization to help low-income people to build affordable homes. He named the foundation ‘Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation’.
