The Backstreet Boys (abbreviated as BSB), an American boy band, is a vocal group consisting of A.J. McLean, Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Kevin Scott Richardson and Brian Littrell. The band was formed in 1993 in Orlando, Florida. The Backstreet Boys rose to fame in 1996, with their debut international album, ‘Backstreet Boys’. The band was formed in high school when Howie Dorough, Nick Carter, and AJ McLean ran into each other during local acting auditions that were taking place in Orlando.

With a blend of R&B balladry, dance pop and hip-hop, the band found its largest audience in Europe and Canada, successfully attracting thousands of people. The band did not start to enjoy success until being in the music industry for almost two years. They rose to fame in an era of teen pop explosion, having friendly competition with NSYNC (a popular American boy band formed in Orlando, Florida). The band released their second album in the following year ‘Backstreet’s Back’, which contributed to the band’s success globally.

The Backstreet Boys had their debut performance in 1993 at SeaWorld Orlando. They continued to perform at various venues such as restaurants, malls and high-profile charity galas. Their initial goal was to build a fan base while trying to get a record deal. The band nearly signed a deal with Mercury Records in 1993 but the deal was called off at the last minute. The group gained superstardom with their third and fourth album ‘Millennium (1999)’ and ‘Black & Blue (2000)’. Some of their early hit singles include “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” and “Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)”, and became the band’s first platinum hits. Not only this, but the album ‘Millennium’ topped the charts and was certified multi-platinum across the world. The album became the best-selling album of 1999 and sold 9,445,732 copies. The band name was decided after Orlando’s Backstreet Market which was also a teen hang-out place.

In 1998, the band was honored by the mayor of Orlando for a tornado relief concert, which raised over $250,000. They announced the day as ‘the Backstreet Boys Day’ in Orlando. In 2001, the band got the opportunity to perform the American national anthem at the Super Bowl XXXV in Tampa, Florida. In 2002, the group decided that they wanted to let go of their management company, but Nick Carter had different plans. He wanted to stay with the management for his solo career. The band started to work on their next album without Carter. In 2005, the band released their comeback album ‘Never Gone’ after spending a year on the recording. The album sold 291,000 copies in the first week of release.

In the year 2013, the Backstreet Boys celebrated their 20th anniversary and also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The band also made a small appearance as fictional characters of themselves in the movie ‘This Is the End’. The group sang their song “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back). They received an award for “Best Musical Moment” at 2014 MTV Movie Awards. In 2015, a documentary (Backstreet Boys: Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of), which covered the band’s career journey through 2013, was released online and in theatres. Some other partnerships and ventures include: a commercial with Old Navy in 2012, a deal with Burger King, Sears and more. The group has received seven Grammy Awards, seven Billboard Music Awards, two American Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, a Juno Award, and many others. The Backstreet Boys have sold over 130 million records globally, making them the best-selling American Vocal group in history, and one of the best-selling music artists all around the world.
