Saucony is an American brand owned by Wolverine Worldwide that sells athletic apparel and footwear. Some of the products commercialized by the company include jackets, athletic shoes, hoodies, sweatpants, t-shirts, socks, and shorts. The brand also sells accessories which include hats and backpacks.
The correct pronunciation of the company’s name, “sock-a-knee,” was once printed on its shoe boxes. The brand’s most popular product line is its racing shoes, famous for its cross-country racing flats and track spikes. Saucony also makes shoes for specific field athletic and track events.
Let’s look into the company’s history, products, and trademarks.
Saucony Company History
Saucony’s history is tied to Hyde Athletic Industries, founded by Russian immigrant Adam Hyde. Adam came to the United States in 1890, taking his first job as a cobbler in a rented space within a laundry. He made slippers for customers from old carpet remnants.
In 1910, Hyde managed to move his business to a house in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There, he founded the company A.R. Hyde and Sons. He continued producing “carpet slippers” and street shoes for children and women until 1932 when he branched into athletic goods.
The first athletic shoes produced by the company were ice skates called Pleasure Skates. By the end of the ‘30s, he had a whole line of athletic footwear, including roller boots, baseball shoes, and bowling shoes.
When World War II broke out, Adam committed his company to produce boots for soldiers. His work earned him the Army/Navy E Award for Manufacturing Excellence. After the war, the company resumed its production of athletic shoes.
In 1952, A.R. Hyde and Sons made its first acquisition, buying Illinois Athletic Shoe Company, the maker of Spot-Bilt athletic shoes.
Hyde’s prowess put him in NASA’s spotlight, which led to him being awarded the contract to produce footwear for America’s space program in 1960. As a result, the Hyde logo was imprinted on the boots worn by astronauts during the first historic spacewalk.
Hyde acquired Saucony Shoe Manufacturing Company in 1968. Saucony was manufacturing running shoes in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. Hyde transferred all its development and production activities for running shoes to its new subsidiary in the early ’70s.
Hyde and Sons remained a family-owned business until the late ‘60s when it went public. The initial public offering was announced soon after Saucony’s acquisition, with the company trading 350,000 shares in October 1969, shortly after going public.
The following year, A.R. Hyde and Sons rebranded to Hyde Athletic Industries, Inc.
In 1976, Hyde made annual sales of about $20 million, with Saucony still being a small niche brand within the company. The brand would get media attention in 1977 after an American national magazine gave Saucony’s shoes the award for “Best Quality.”
Runners around the country and investors would turn their attention to the brand. The first acquisition attempt would occur in September 1977, with Colgate Palmolive offering 312,960 shares of Colgate stock, which were valued at around $7.7 million. However, the deal would get canceled in less than a month.
Saucony’s remained under Hyde’s in the ‘80s, expanding its line of running shoes as the popularity of triathlons and marathon runs increased. More long-distance runners became loyal to the brand despite Hyde experiencing slow growth during the decade.
The company’s size was its most significant limiting factor. It didn’t have enough capital to splurge on advertising, unlike big brands such as Nike that were riding on the explosive interest in athletic shoes. However, Saucony’s slow growth enabled the company to get a better grip on its quality control which proved pivotal in its future success.
By 1990, the company had solid annual sales of about $60 million with a workforce of 250 employees, up from 150 in 1988. The company also boasted U.S.-made running shoes manufactured in its Bangor, Maine factory.
In the spring of 1998, Hyde was formally renamed Saucony, Inc.
Saucony Footwear and Partnerships
Saucony offers a wide variety of shoes, including trail running, running, walking, racing, and a college collection. These shoes use specific technology relevant to the shoe’s intended use. They’re also made by focusing on the running done by the runner, their foot size, pronation, arch type, and running location.
Saucony teamed up with Dunkin’ Donuts during the 122nd Boston Marathon to create a strawberry-frosted donut-themed running shoe to commemorate the event. The Saucony X Dunkin’ Kinvara 9 came in a donut box with the heel of the shoe covered in rainbow sprinkles.
Saucony Trademarks
Saucony has sought or obtained federal trademark registration for about forty trademarks. These include “SAUCONY,” “VERSARUN,” and “INFINITE LOOP.”
On August 27, 1985, Saucony obtained federal trademark registration for “SAUCONY” and uses the trademark for its shoes and athletic shoes.
Saucony sought federal trademark registration for “INFINITE LOOP” on April 11, 2022. The company intends to use the trademark for its bras, gloves, hats, pants, headwear, and shorts.
