Converse, Inc. is an American brand and manufacturer of athletic and lifestyle footwear. It runs several manufacturing facilities within the U.S., producing most of its original releases. The company also has other manufacturing plants it’s leased.
The company’s sales records are among the highest in the industry, with some shoes, such as the Converse All-Star Basketball shoe, selling more than 500 million pairs in over 90 countries globally. The company has also diversified to various rubber products, such as sports apparel and complete lines of athletic shoes for cross-training, tennis, running, team sports, children’s recreation, and walking.
Let’s look into the company’s history, products, and trademarks.
Converse Company History
Marquis Mills Converse, a 47-year-old manager at a footwear manufacturing firm, opened the Converse Rubber Shoe Company. The company, founded in 1908, opened its first base in Malden, Massachusetts. It started as a rubber shoe manufacturer selling winterized rubber-soled footwear for men, women, and children.
Converse stuck to producing shoes daily from 1910 until 1915 when it ventured into athletic shoes.
In 1918, the Converse All-Star Basketball shoe was launched. In 1923, basketball player Charles H. “Chuck” Taylor walked into Converse offices complaining of sore feet. Converse offered him a job as a brand salesman and ambassador promoting the shoes within the U.S.
In 1932, Converse added Taylor’s signature to the All-Star patch on the high-topped sneakers. Taylor improved the sales of the shoes until he died in 1969, still serving as the brand’s ambassador.
Converse dived into the basketball arena, designing custom shoes for New York Renaissance, the first all-African-American basketball team.
The company received significant public highlight on March 2, 1962, after Wilt Chamberlain, the Philadelphia Warriors’ center, scored 100 points in an NBA game. He wore a pair of Chucks made after Charles H. “Chuck” Taylor. His team took a 169-147 victory over the New York Knicks.
After the U.S joined Word War II, Converse shifted to producing rubberized footwear, protective suits, and outerwear for the military. After the war, the company resumed the production of athletic footwear.
The company’s popularity grew in the ’50 and ‘60s, often associated with an American image thanks to the Converse Basketball Yearbook. Charles Kerins created the book’s cover art that celebrated Converse’s role in the lives of college and high school athletes.
In the ‘70s, Converse acquired P.F. Flyers from PF Goodrich. Since P.F. Flyers was one of its fiercest competitors, the acquisition led to a monopoly in the shoe market. In 1975, the determination of an anti-trust lawsuit ordered both brands to split.
After the split, Converse retained possession of trademark rights for the Jack Purcell line it bought from the P.F. Flyers acquisition. Jack Purcell shoes are still manufactured and sold today.
Converse also started losing market share in the ‘70s with the entrance of fierce competitors such as Nike, Adidas, and Puma. Converse stopped being the official shoe of the National Basketball Association (NBA) as Reebok introduced new technology and designs to the sports market.
In the ‘80s, rubber shoes regained popularity as casual footwear. However, Converse had become too dependent on its “All Stars” brand with a fast-collapsing market. By 2000, Converse was on the verge of receivership as debt piled up yearly.
On January 22, 2001, Converse filed for bankruptcy, shutting down its last manufacturing plants in the U.S. by March 30, 2001. Production fully moved overseas.
Footwear Acquisitions, led by Bill Simon and Marsden Cason, purchased Converse from bankruptcy and added industry partners such as Lisa Kempa, Jack Boys, David Maddocks, and Jim Stroesser to lead the turnaround.
Converse moved its headquarters to North Andover, Massachusetts, from North Reading, Massachusetts. It stayed in North Andover for 13 years.
Nike paid $309 million to acquire Converse in July 2003. It relaunched the footwear around 2010.
Converse Products
Converse is famous for several products that sold tens of millions of units. Some of these include:
- The Weapon – “The Weapon” basketball shoe was launched in 1986. It featured two color schemes designed to match the kits of basketball teams. Converse manufactured and sold it in high-top and low-cut varieties
- Chuck Taylor All-Star II – This shoe was a redesigned model of the Chuck Taylor All-Star. It was released on July 28, 2015, featuring Nike’s modern technology while maintaining most of the original outward appearance
- Special editions – Some special edition Converse shoes include D.C. Comics, Pink Floyd, Super Mario, The Ramones, Jimi Hendrix, and Miley Cyrus.
Converse Trademarks
Converse has sought or obtained federal trademark registration for about 63 trademarks. These include “CHUCK TAYLOR,” “ALL STAR,” and “CONVERSE.”
On July 24, 1034, Converse obtained a federal trademark registration for “CHUCK TAYLOR” and uses the trademark for its shoes made of rubber, fabric, leather, and their combinations.
Converse obtained federal trademark registration for “ALL STAR” on January 27, 2004. The company uses the trademark for its footwear.
