Brooks Running Company, popularly known as Brooks, is an American sports equipment company that designs and sells high-performance apparel and accessories for men, women, and kids. These include clothing, sneakers, and other accessories.
The company sells its products to about 60 countries worldwide, with its headquarters in Seattle, Washington. It is also a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. Initially, the company manufactured shoes for a wide range of sports before focusing on high-performance technology.

Brooks Company History
John Brooks Goldenberg founded Brooks Sports, Inc. in 1914. The company was formed from the acquisition of Quaker Shoe Company which manufactured ballet slippers and bathing shoes. The company set up its first base in Philadelphia, operating under a partnership between John Goldenberg and his brothers Frank and Michael.
John Brooks maintained the Quaker Shoes company name until 1920, when he rebranded the company to Brooks Shoes Manufacturing Co., Inc. However, the company sold its shoes under the brand name Bruxshu.
John Brooks expanded the company’s product portfolio, adding gymnasium shoes to its list of bathing shoes and ballet slippers. In 1938, the company introduced orthopedic shoes for children, dubbed Pedicraft. It also introduced rubber brakes for roller skates called “quick stops.” The company patented this innovation in 1944.
John Brook’s second corporate acquisition happened in 1938. He bought the Carmen Shoe Manufacturing Company operating in Hanover, Pennsylvania. The Philadelphia facility purchased, cut, stitched, and fit better-grade leather, while the Hanover operations used lower-grade materials.
The company sold shoes from both facilities in Philadelphia under the Brooks brand. The shoes ranged from inexpensive to highly-priced options.
Several operational changes followed in 1956, which saw John and his brother part ways. John informed his brother Michael that he could no longer renew their partnership agreement. Michael turned to his nephew, Barton, who was Frank’s son, to discuss expanding the Carmen operation.
The partnership was dissolved in 1957, voiding the existence of Brooks Shoe Manufacturing Company. Michael and his nephew, Barton, each acquired 50% of Carmen Shoe Manufacturing Company.
Michael assumed full control of the company in 1958 after purchasing Barton’s interest in the company. He renamed Carmen Shoe Manufacturing Company to the Brooks Manufacturing Company.
In 1975, Brooks collaborated with elite runners such as Marty Liquori to develop a running shoe. Brooks’ launched its first high-performance running shoe, Villanova, out of the collaboration. The shoe used EVA, an air-infused foam technology that other athletic brands quickly adopted.
After the Villanova, Brooks launched the Vantage, a running shoe with a wedge to address overpronation. The Vantage was ranked number one in the annual Runner’s World running guide in 1977, using newly developed measurements for flexibility, cushioning, and durability.
This feature and the innovative technology used in the Vantage exploded its demand among runners. Towards the end of the decade, Vantage featured as one of the top-three selling brands in the U.S.
However, production issues in the ‘80s that saw several defective shoes hit stores saw the company suffer substantial financial losses. Nearly 30% of the manufactured shoes were returned, with Brooks scrapping about 50,000 pairs.
The company later filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy before being purchased in an auction by Wolverine World Wide, a footwear manufacturer, in 1981.
The company resumed operations shortly after, launching a new shoe in 1982 called the “Chariot” that focused on runners’ stability. Brooks for Women launched in 1987, featuring a line of shoes anatomically designed and adjusted for women.
Brooks’ launched one of its best-selling shoes in 1992. Dubbed the “Beast,” the product was a motion-control shoe featuring integrated diagonal rollbar technology.
After launching the Beast, the company also produced one of the best-selling running shoes of all time, the Adrenaline GTS. The shoe, launched in 1994, featured a firmer midsole density and a semi-curve that accommodated runners with a wide forefoot and high arch.
Brooks’ Commitment to Sustainability and Social Responsibility
Brooks Running uses environmentally conscious practices in its manufacturing and business processes. For instance, several models of their shoes feature High-Performance Rubber Green (HPR Green) outsoles made from sand instead of petroleum.
The company also uses recycled materials “whenever possible” to make other parts of their shoes, such as fabrics, laces, packaging, and hangtags.
In 2014, Brooks Running partnered with Bluesign Technologies to manage, evaluate, and eliminate priority chemicals used in manufacturing apparel. Partner companies to the Bluesign system must establish management systems for improving consumer safety, resource productivity, air emissions, water emissions, and occupational health and safety.
Brooks’ Trademarks
Brooks has sought or obtained federal trademark registration for about 53 trademarks. These include “BEAST,” “DNA LOFT,” and “VIVIFY.”
On January 18, 2005, Brooks obtained federal trademark registration for “BEAST” and uses the trademark for its athletic footwear.
Brooks sought federal trademark registration for “DNA LOFT” on May 15, 2019. The company intends to use the trademark for its footwear.
