Will Smith is a musician, actor, and producer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is best known for his role in the popular television sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and several summer release, blockbuster movies such as Men In Black and Independence Day.
Willard Carroll Smith Jr. was born in 1968. He was raised by his mother, a school board administrator, and his father, a U.S. Air Force veteran. He has three siblings. After attending Our Lady of Lourdes elementary school he went to Overbrook High School.
Smith’s first foray into music was with his long-time friend and turntablist Jeffrey “DJ Jazzy Jeff” Townes and beatboxer Clarence “Ready Rock C” Holmes. Word Up Records released their single “Girls Ain’t Nothing but Trouble” in 1986. The single became a hit right before Smith’s high school graduation. Their first album, titled Rock the House, was released by Jive Records in 1987. Their second studio album was titled, He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper (1988). Its most significant single was “Parents Just Don’t Understand” which reached the twelfth spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The third studio album from DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince was And in This Corner… (1989), which received two Grammy Awards nominations. The fourth studio album, Homebase (1991) contained their most popular single, “Summertime.” It won a Grammy Award for Best Single.
In 1990, NBC approached Will Smith with the opportunity to star in the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The television show was very successful and lasted for six seasons from 1990 until 1996. Smith won two Golden Globes for the show and the show was nominated for a total of seven NAACP Image Awards and three Kids’ Choice Awards. The show served as Smith’s vehicle into the acting world.
Smith’s first major movie roles were in Six Degrees of Separation (1993), Bad Boys (1995), and as part of the ensemble cast in Independence Day (1996). All of these movies were commercially successful and helped to propel him to even further fame. In the summer of 1997, he starred in Men in Black and also recorded the film’s theme song. The song was also on Big Willie Style, Smith’s first solo album. The album had three top ten singles. His second studio album came with the release of the film Wild Wild West (1999) and was titled Willennium. It’s top single was “Will 2K.”
In 2001, he starred in the biopic Ali. He released his third studio album in 2002, called Born to Reign. The top single was “Black Suits Comin’ (Nod Ya Head),” and was the theme for his movie Men in Black II (2002). He starred in a string of box office hits, including Bad Boys II (2003), Shark Tale (2004), and I, Robot (2004). His album Lost and Found was released in 2005 with the lead single, “Switch.” He starred with his son Jaden in the movie The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) and his daughter Willow appeared in his hit film I Am Legend (2007). Smith also starred in Hancock (2008), Men in Black 3 (2012), After Earth (2013), Focus (2015), Concussion (2015), Suicide Squad (2016), Collateral Beauty (2016), Bright (2017), and Aladdin (2019). In 2020, he reprised his role from the Bad Boys franchise in the new installment, Bad Boys for Life. He is also expected to star in the film Emancipation.
Smith is married to actress and businesswoman, Jada Koren Pinkett, and they have two children. He also has a son from a previous marriage. Together with his wife, he owns a production company, Overbrook Entertainment. Overbrook Entertainment filed a trademark application for its company name, as well as other names and phrases.
Smith has personally filed six federal trademark applications. He obtained a trademark registration for his name as it relates to recorded music and to musical performance. Will obtained a trademark registration for his stage name “Fresh Prince” in digital media and sound recordings among other things in 2009. And he also obtained a federal trademark registration for “Johnny Nutshell” for use in paper products like greeting cards, invitation cards, and posters made of paper. Smith uses a logo that is an image of a running man on T-shirts and other gear. He obtained a federal trademark registration for this logo in 2020. He also obtained a federal trademark registration for a logo with a similar shape and added color to be used with clothing items and headgear in 2020.
In his career, Will Smith has appeared in more than twenty-five feature films, has recorded five solo albums, and appeared on more than a dozen others. He has won awards for his music, his acting, and his film production efforts. He lives in Calabasas, Los Angeles with his wife and his estimated net worth is around $350 million.
