Matt Damon is a Golden Globe-winning Academy Award-nominated actor, producer, and screenwriter. He is best known for his work with longtime friend Ben Affleck on the movie Good Will Hunting as well as in the Bourne franchise of movies and the Ocean’s movie series.

Matthew Paige Damon was born in late 1970. His mother was a professor at Lesley University and his father was a stockbroker. He is of English, Scottish, Finnish and Swedish ancestry and takes his middle name from his mother’s maiden name. His parents lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts when he was born, but soon moved Damon and his brother to Newton, Massachusetts. Two years later, after a divorce, Nancy Carlsson-Paige would move her two children back to Cambridge, where they grew up.

Damon attended a local public high school, Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, where he is remembered as a good student. He worked on school theatre productions with a close friend, schoolmate, and future co-star Ben Affleck. He was a member of Harvard University’s Class of 2002 but left school early to work on a movie.

He had worked on plays such as A… My Name is Alice and Burn This. He had his first speaking role in Mystic Pizza, in 1988, while he was still a student, as well as small roles in Rising Son and School Ties. The role, he left school to take, was in the movie Geronimo: An American Legend, however, the movie was not as successful as he had hoped it would be. He found significantly more success with his next role which was in Courage Under Fire (1996).

Throughout their time in school and as roommates, Damon and Affleck wrote the screenplay for Good Will Hunting (1997). After first selling it to another company, Miramax purchased the script and the movie went on to become a major success. It won the Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay, the Oscar Award for Best Screenplay, and was nominated for nine total Academy Awards. That year he also starred in the critically acclaimed film, The Rainmaker. He appeared in Saving Private Ryan and Rounders in 1998 and The Talented Mr. Ripley and Dogma in 1999.

He was cast in leading roles in 2000, in movies such as All the Pretty Horses and The Legend of Bagger Vance. He then took roles in two wildly successful series of movies, the Ocean’s Series and the Bourne series.

He and Ben Affleck, founded the production company LivePlanet in 2002, along with two other producers, Sean Bailey, and Chris Moore. The company produced its award-winning series Project Greenlight (2001–2005, 2015). He also wrote and starred in the film Gerry in 2002.

He worked on many varied projects throughout the 2000s, including voice work in Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002), a role in Stuck on You (2003), The Brothers Grimm (2005), Syriana (2005), The Good Shepherd (2006), The Departed (2006). He also had cameos in Youth Without Youth (2007) and Che (2008).

As an established actor in the 2010s, Damon continued to be very successful and had many roles, some of which included television appearances as well as films such as Invictus (2009), True Grit (2010), The Adjustment Bureau (2011), Contagion (2011), We Bought a Zoo (2011), Promised Land (2012), Behind the Candelabra (2013), Elysium (2013), The Monuments Men (2014), The Martian (2015), The Great Wall (2016), Suburbicon (2017) and Ford v Ferrari (2019).

Damon is a well-known activist. He helped found the charitable organization H2O Africa Foundation. The foundation registered its own trademark back in 2006 but has since merged with WaterPartners, who now owns the trademark for the foundation. He also helped found a charity organization called Not On Our Watch Project. Co-founders include George Clooney, Ben Affleck, Jerry Weintraub, David Pressman, Brad Pitt, and Don Cheadle. The organization aims to focus global attention on mass atrocities to help bring them to a stop quickly. In the past, the organization has focused on places such as Sudan and Syria.

Damon is estimated to have a net worth of around $170 million. Damon has only obtained one trademark registration. It was for his own name, to be used for services as an actor and entertainer. Although some of his movies have faced insignificant lawsuits, Damon has not been involved in litigation involving his own trademark.

Matt Damon met his wife while filming a movie in Argentina. He married Luciana Bozán in late 2005 and the couple has three daughters. He is known as an avid poker player and has even played in the 2010 World Series of Poker main event. Damon now resides with his wife and daughters in Los Angeles, California.
