Mark Wahlberg is a rapper, actor, producer, and businessman. Wahlberg is most well-known for his work as an actor in movies like The Departed and The Fighter as well as television shows like Entourage and Boardwalk Empire.
Mark Robert Michael Wahlberg was born into a middle-class family that lived in Boston, Massachusetts on June 5, 1971. Mark is the younger brother of Donnie Wahlberg, who found fame as a teenager in the boy band New Kids On The Block, before going on to a serious acting career. He has seven other older brothers and sisters.
Wahlberg’s first venture into music was a very short stint in his older brother’s band, which he quit after a few months. In 1990, under the stage name Marky Mark, he formed Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch with Anthony Thomas, Terry Yancy, Hector Barros, and Scott Ross. Their first record was produced by Wahlberg’s older brother Donnie and was called Music for the People. The album had a number one single “Good Vibrations” and a second single “Wildside” was a top ten hit. Their second album was You Gotta Believe. The title track found moderate success. During this time they also had a video game called Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch: Make My Video.
In terms of music, Wahlberg also recorded a collaborative album with Prince Ital Joe, called Life in the Streets, in 1994 and The Remix Album, in 1995, which were produced in Germany. He released several singles which climbed the charts in Germany as well as other parts of Europe, including “No Mercy”, “That’s the Way I Like It”, “Feel the Vibe” and “Best of My Love.” All of his singles were released on an album titled All Around the World, in 1997.
Wahlberg worked as a fitness and fashion model in the early 1990s during his music career. He worked for Calvin Klein on both print and commercial ads and was featured in Vanity Fair. He was shot by many notable photographers, including Annie Leibovitz and Herb Ritts. He was signed by GNC to be a spokesperson for Marked, their line of supplements in 2012.
His first movie was The Substitute (1993), which was a television movie. This is the only movie where his stage name “Marky Mark” was used in the credits. His first major motion picture was Renaissance Man (1994). This was followed by successful roles in The Basketball Diaries (1995), Fear (1996), Boogie Nights (1997), and Three Kings (1999).
He had many successful movie roles during the 2000s, including The Perfect Storm (2000), Planet of the Apes (2001), The Truth About Charlie (2002), The Italian Job (2003) and I Heart Huckabees (2004). One of his most successful projects of the 2000s was the HBO series Entourage (2004–2011), which he directed. He was nominated for many awards for The Departed (2006). He also had varying roles in Invincible (2006), We Own the Night (2007), Max Payne (2008), and The Happening (2008).
His acting success continued throughout the 2010s and his roles included appearances in Ted (2012), Lone Survivor (2013), The Gambler (2014), Daddy’s Home (2015), Deepwater Horizon (2016), Patriots Day (2016), All the Money in the World (2017), Mile 22 (2018), Spenser Confidential (2020) and Scoob! (2020).
Outside of acting, he has many business ventures. He is a co-owner of Wahlburgers along with two of his brothers, and it was his idea to expand the restaurant as well as to feature it in a reality television show. He is part-owner of the Barbados Tridents cricket team of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League. He helped Tom Dowd build a sports nutrition company called Performance Inspired and is an investor in Aquahydrate (a bottled water company), StockX (a shoe marketplace), and F45 (a fitness franchise).
In 2018, Wahlberg filed a trademark application for his name, his initials, and a logo, in relation to his purchase of automobile dealerships in central Ohio. He purchased five automobile dealerships with partner Jay Feldman, including Bobby Layman Chevrolet (now Mark Wahlberg Chevrolet), Haydocy Buick-GMC (now Mark Wahlberg Buick-GMC), Haydocy’s Airstream and RV (now Mark Wahlberg Airstream and RV), and Jack Maxton Chevrolet (now Mark Wahlberg Chevrolet of Worthington) all located in Columbus, Ohio or the surrounding suburbs. He also owns Mark Wahlberg Chevrolet of Avon, which is his fifth dealership in Ohio, giving him a location closer to the larger Cleveland metropolitan area.
He also obtained a trademark registration for “Closest to the Hole Productions,” which is his film production company. More recently he has filed a trademark application for the name “Wahl Street” and “Wahlstreet” in relation to a show that he is currently working on.
In August of 2009, he married model Rhea Durham. He now resides in Beverly Hills, California with his wife and four daughters. Wahlberg remains very close to his brothers, with whom he still runs successful businesses. It is generally believed that Mark Wahlberg has an estimated net worth of around $350 million. He is still actively working as an actor and has several ongoing projects.
