James Patterson is a prolific American author whose books have sold over 300 million copies. He is also a philanthropist and activist, leading the charge to make books fun and accessible for everyone and to get people reading more.
James Brendan Patterson was born into a working class family of Irish descent in Newburgh, New York in 1947. He attended Manhattan College in New York City where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English. He also attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he earned a Master of Arts degree, also in English. He went on to become an advertising executive. He retired in 1976 after a successful career.
He published his first novel, The Thomas Berryman Number, in 1976. Although many publishers rejected the book, it was quite a success. It sold almost 10,000 copies. The Mystery Writers of America awarded the debut novel with the Edgar Award.
Patterson is credited with more than 200 titles and various other projects. He is the first person to have the number one bestseller on both the adult and children’s The New York Times bestsellers list at the same time.
He has written several popular series of books. The most popular is the Alex Cross series. The first of the series was published in 1993. The series of books has gone on to inspire three movies. Patterson filed a trademark application for the name Alex Cross in 2013 for use in fiction works, novels and books.
Patterson is also responsible for several other series as well, including Women’s Murder Club series, which is a mystery series set in San Francisco. The first of this series is called First to Die, it was published in March of 2001, and was made into a made-for-television movie. There are twenty one books in this series and Patterson trademarked the name Women’s Murder Club in 2012. The Michael Bennett series is based around the fictional New York City detective by the same name. This is the most popular detective series of the last twenty-five years. The first of this series was released in 2007 and is titled Step on a Crack. Patterson filed a trademark application for the name Michael Bennett in 2012. The Maximum Ride series falls under the sci-fi thriller genre and is written for young adults. Maximum Ride was trademarked by Patterson in 2012. He also wrote the series Middle School, I Funny, Daniel X, Witch and Wizard, and has received trademark registrations for their names, as well as others.
Patterson enjoys collaborating with others in many of his books, as he says that collaborations introduce new and interesting ideas for his books. Patterson has worked with authors like Mark Sullivan, J.D. Barker, Ashwin Sanghi and even former United States President, Bill Clinton.
He is also known for his great philanthropic efforts on behalf of literacy and great literature. In 2005 he created James Patterson PageTurner Awards as a way to award more than $100,000 to schools, libraries, authors and college students who were helping to promote books and reading. After three years, he decided to move his efforts to a new project ReadKiddoRead.com. He filed trademark applications for both the name and logo for this program, which is designed to suggest appropriate books for children in 2009. He also runs the James Patterson Teacher Education Scholarship at four major universities, the College Book Bucks program which helps students pay for books at independent bookstores and the James Patterson Pledge, which along with Scholastic Books, helps promote reading to younger children.
Outside of his work as an author and philanthropist, Patterson is always looking for new ways to make books more fun and accessible. One of his ideas was BookShots. He owns trademarks for the word BookShots, as well as, BookShots Flames for this project. BookShots are shorter stories, like novellas, that are less than 150 pages. They were designed to be a quick and easier read. Patterson had hoped to make them easily available as well, online and hardcopy in retail stores.
Patterson has written (or co-written) over 250 books and more than 65 of those have gone on to become New York Times Number One Best Sellers. Some of his most famous works include Along Came A Spider, Kiss The Girls and The President Is Missing.
James Patterson is considered one of the most widely read authors in the world. For several years, his titles were the most borrowed of any in the UK library system and his books landed on the New York Times bestsellers list more than 100 times. He has been honored by The National Book Foundation with the Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community, The Mystery Writers of America with two Edgar Awards and six Emmy awards.
James Patterson resides in Florida, with his wife Susan and their son. His estimated net worth is believed to be around $700 million.
