Ellen DeGeneres is an iconic comedian and talk show host from Metairie, Louisiana. She has won numerous awards for her work both onscreen and as a producer and is known worldwide for her contributions to charity.
After early jobs in retail and labor, DeGeneres tried her hand at stand up comedy, working mainly at coffee houses and small clubs. She toured the United States in the early 1980s with great success. She appeared in the movie “Coneheads” and her first television role was on a show called “Open House.” She would be cast in other minor roles until 1994, when her stand up comedy became the seed for the television sitcom “Ellen.” Considered somewhat controversial at the time, Ellen DeGeneres made the bold statement of coming out as a lesbian during an interview on the “Oprah Winfrey Show.” This real life event closely parallel her character coming out as a lesbian on the television show. This episode of the show received some of the series highest praise and ratings, although the show itself would be cancelled after only one more season, due to failing ratings. Her second stint on television would only last one season in 2001, with the ABC sitcom “The Ellen Show.”
Some of DeGeneres’ greatest successes have come as a host. She began hosting “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in September of 2003. The show found almost immediate success being nominated for eleven Daytime Emmy Awards (and winning four of them) in only it’s first season. The show developed a reputation for being funny and light hearted as Ellen danced and told jokes to open the show. She has also used the show as a platform for social change and her charity work, often showcasing private people who do great things for others and their community. She has been able to haul in extraordinarily famous celebrity guests for her show including people like Jennifer Anniston, Oprah WInfrey, Michelle Obama, Justin Timerberlake and Paris Hilton. In 2018, she began hosting a game show that was a spin off from games that she had invented to play on the talk show. The show was called Ellen’s “Game of Games” and began airing regularly in 2018. Both her talk show and her game show still air regularly.
As a television host, DeGeneres has also been very popular on the award show circuit. Over the years she has played host to the Grammy Awards (1996 and 1997), the Emmy Awards in (2001 and 2005), and the 79th Academy Awards in 2007. She even won an Emmy for her hosting of the Academy Awards ceremony.
Aside from hosting duties, Degeneres has lent her voice to animated characters a few times over the years, including roles in Finding Nemo, Dr. Dolittle and Finding Dory (the sequel to Finding Nemo). She has also been a spokesperson for companies like Cover Girl, American Express, and JC Penney.
DeGeneres shows her own line of products, a line of apparel, accessories and home goods on QVC. She has filed trademarks for her initials “ED Ellen DeGeneres” for this line. This includes some pending trademark applications in association with specific items such as candles, kitchen items, home storage items and more. She has a line of dog accessories and a line of cat accessories through PetSmart under this trademark as well. She has also agreed to partner with Walmart to produce a line of similar goods at a more affordable price point. In the past she has produced other lines for specific charities, such as David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and her own wildlife fund, the Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Fund, which helps gorillas. Although all of Degeneres’ trademarks are related to these lines, she has had to deal with some other trademark related issues. She was sued along with Walmart by street artist Julian Rivera for using a heart shaped love design that he had a trademark for and used many times as a motif in his artwork. Walmart had marketed T-shirts by DeGeneres’ line that had a visually similar image.
Ellen DeGeneres had several high profile relationships before marrying Australian-American actress and model Portia Lee James DeGeneres (professionally known as Portia de Rossi). She resides in Beverly Hills, California with her wife and many pets. She has used her celebrity to shine a light LGBT issues. She also champions global AIDS awareness, mental health awareness and animal rights. DeGeneres is a well known Vegan and was named “Woman of the Year” by PETA in 2009. She is well known for being politically active as well as maintaining high profile friendships on both sides of the aisle. Her net worth is generally considered to be around $500 million.
