Dr. Phil McGraw is a television personality and host as well as bestselling author. Together with his wife Robin, he has had a successful television talk show for almost twenty years and he has written dozens of books, several of which were best sellers. He is known for his straight to the point style and quirky one liners.
Phillip Calvin McGraw was born in Vinita, Oklahoma in 1950. Raised in Oklahoma and then Kansas, McGraw excelled at football and earned a scholarship to the University of Tulsa, later transferring to Midwestern State University where he graduated in 1975 with a B.A. in psychology. In 1976 he earned an M.A. in experimental psychology. His PhD is from the University of North Texas. After he finished school, he joined his father’s private psychology practice.
McGraw married Debbie Higgins McCall in 1970. The marriage was short lived and after a messy split, their marriage was annulled in 1973. It was during this time that he met his second wife Robin Jo Jameson.
In 1985, McGraw partnered with a businesswoman from Texas to run a series of seminars. The seminars were very successful at the time, and he sold his stake in the company in 1991. Around this time he opened his own company, Courtroom Sciences, Inc. (CSI), which advised trial lawyers in litigation psychology. His company would help Oprah Winfrey win a major court case against beef producers. It was his connection with Oprah that helped to launch him to national prominence after he began appearing on her show regularly. His appearances were so successful that in 2002, he formed his own production company and launched his own syndicated television talk show. The show was originally produced by Oprah’s Harpo Studio.
Dr. Phil produced several spin offs, including Dr. Phil House, Decision House, and Daytime Emmy Award winning Daily Mail TV. The most successful spin off was The Doctors, which was produced by his son Jay McGraw. The Doctors had eight Daytime Emmy Award nominations and won a Daytime Emmy Award as Outstanding Talk Show/Informative in 2010. In 2012, he founded a telehealth company called Doctor on Demand, which would become very prominent during the coronavirus epidemic as a new way of seeking mental health treatment.
In 2017, a former employee fraudulently obtained video footage that she intended to release. In what ended up being a rather unusual trademark case, the judge ruled against the former employee who had tried to use “fair use” to cover up her theft and attempt to make a profit on the video.
Many trademarks that you might expect to be held by Phil McGraw are held by the entity he formed specifically for his tv show, Peteski Productions, Inc. The rest of the almost dozen trademarks held by or applied for by Peteski Productions, Inc. pertain to podcasts and many specifically pertain to McGraw’s wife of more than forty years, Robin.
Robin McGraw started as a staple sitting in the audience of her husband’s Dr.Phil Show. After some time she began doing special guest spots and then episodes and her involvement publicly grew over time. Robin is a philanthropist and best selling author in her own right. Her books have included titles such as What’s Age Got to Do with It?: Living Your Healthiest and Happiest Life, Christmas in My Home and Heart and Robin McGraw’s Complete Makeover Guide: A Companion to What’s Age Got to Do with It? As a philanthropist, Robin is inclined to support charities involving children, women and military families.
Dr. Phil McGraw and his wife Robin now reside in Beverly Hills, California. His show, The Doctor Phil Show is currently renewed to air until at least May of 2023, which will have seen the show on air for a full twenty one seasons. Phil and Robin McGraw have two sons Jay and Jordan, a daughter-in-law Erica, and two grandchildren. Phil McGraw’s current net worth is believed to be around 440 million dollars, with an annual salary of 88 million dollars.
