David Copperfield, born September 16, 1956, in Metuchen, Jersey, is a world-famous magician and one of the wealthiest entertainers in the world. Copperfield has created 11 Guinness World Records and won 21 Emmy Awards. Originally known as David Seth Kotkin, Copperfield was born to Jewish parents, Hyman Kotkin and Rebecca Kotkin. His father owned harberdashery shop and his mother used to work for an insurance company. Copperfield was initially an introvert who overcame his shyness with the help of magic. He attended Metuchen High School and graduated in 1974. His first step towards becoming a magician was when he got an admission in the Society of American Magicians when he was only 12 years of age. In his neighborhood, he became known as Davino the Boy Magician. At the age of 16, Copperfield started teaching a course at New York University and also started performing by the name David Copperfield, after the popular novel of Charles Dickens. Despite adopting the name from a famous book, Copperfield has been able to protect the name with trademarks in association to his magic act.
When Copperfield was only 18 years old, he landed an opportunity to act as a lead in a new Chicago musical comedy “The Magic Man”. The show became the longest running musical comedy in the history of Chicago. He got his breakthrough role when the producer Joseph Cates spotted his talent and offered him an opportunity to work in one of his productions ‘The Magic of ABC’. Copperfield got the chance to perform regularly in front of a large audience, he used to do four performances in a day and 500 shows in a year. When the show ended, Copperfield returned to New York. Copperfield has received the honor of being the only entertainer who was able to sell over 40 million tickets. Not only this, but Copperfield has also been named as the “Magician of the Century” and “Magician of the Millennium,” and he was also the first one to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame awarded to a living magician. He has been successful in gaining a lot of popularity and receiving honors over the years and during his entire career.
Copperfield’s most famous works include walking through the Great Wall of China, escaping from a flaming raft over Niagara Falls and making the Statue of Liberty disappear. Copperfield introduced and opened the International Museum and Library of the Conjuring Arts in Las Vegas, Nevada. The purpose of which was to preserve the history and art of magic. He also introduced ‘Project Magic’ in 1982, this program used sleight-of-hand magic as a way of physical therapy. In the year 1996, Copperfield realized his dream to perform on Broadway. He released “Dreams and Nightmares” in collaboration with Francis Ford Coppola. They formed a record on selling the most tickets in a week, more than ‘The Lion King’ and ‘The Producers’. In collaboration with Joyce Oates, Dean Koontz and Ray Bradbury, Copperfield published ‘David Copperfield’s Tales of the Impossible’ in the year 1996, it was basically a compilation of information related to the field of illusions and magic. The book was a success which encouraged Copperfield to publish another one with the name ‘David Copperfield’s Beyond Imagination’ in 1997. However, he never filed a trademark application for the book in the United States. Apart from his live performances, Copperfield has also gotten the chance to star in some television shows and Hollywood movies such as Terror Train’ (1980), ‘America’s Got Talent’ (2010), and ‘Burt Wonderstone’ (2013).
Copperfield has filed documents for trademarks with the name ‘MAGIC NATION’, this includes products in the apparel category mainly, t-shirts. He also has trademarks for the wordmarks, ‘ATTILA THE HUG’, ‘LIVE THE IMPOSSIBLE’, and ‘KING OF MAGIC’. These are also in the apparel category, as well as entertainment, mainly including t-shirts and live magic performances. His most recent trademark filing is for a logo on posters and clothing.
David Copperfield has an estimated net worth of more than $1.2 billion. He was once hospitalized and had a major drowning accident while rehearsing for the trick Escape from Death. His childhood role models were Orson Welles, Fred Astaire and Walt Disney. Copperfield owns a private resort comprising of eleven Bahamian islands, called ‘The Islands of Copperfield Bay’. A lot of celebrities have visited this resort. Copperfield has also been featured on the cover of Esquire, Vanity Fair, Forbes, and Architectural Digest.
