Russell Westbrook is a professional basketball player who is a nine-time All-Star and a member of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team.
Russell Westbrook III was born in Long Beach, California, and raised in Hawthorne, California. He played high school basketball at Leuzinger High School in Lawndale, California. By his senior over two assists, and three steals. He fulfilled a lifelong dream when he was recruited to play for UCLA. After playing as a backup during his freshman year, the next year Westbrook averaged 12 points, four rebounds, five assists, and two steals. He was named Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year as well as All-Conference Third Team and Pac-10 All-Defensive Team. At the end of the basketball season, he declared for the draft.
Westbrook was drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder (then the Seattle SuperSonics). He had an outstanding rookie season, which included recording his first professional triple-double. For the season, he averaged 15 points, five assists, five rebounds, and one steal and was honored as part of the All-Rookie team.
He played for the Oklahoma City Thunder for eleven seasons from 2008 until 2019. Westbrook has also played for the Houston Rockets and the Washington Wizards, though he currently plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. Throughout his career, he has been named an NBA All-Star nine times, the NBA All-Star Game MVP twice, All-NBA First Team twice, All-NBA Second Team five times, and All-NBA Third Team twice. He was the league scoring champion twice and led the league in assists for three seasons. He is widely considered to be a future Hall of Famer.
Having garnered some of the most lucrative contracts in the history of the league, including the largest player contract in history (when it was signed in 2017), Westbrook is known for far more than just basketball and is also very active as an entrepreneur, designer, and philanthropist. He established Russell Westbrook Enterprises, Inc. as an umbrella company for his entrepreneurial and philanthropic efforts.
One such entrepreneurial effort was a lifestyle brand and clothing line. Russell Westbrook Enterprises, Inc. has filed a trademark application for a logo which is a stylized letter “W” for many items associated with this brand, including athletic apparel, perfumes, colognes, eyewear, bags, wallets, and luggage. It also filed a trademark application for his favorite motto, “WHY NOT,” for things like athletic shoes, shirts, sports caps and hats, and wristband bracelets in support of his charitable foundation. Additionally, the company applied for a trademark for “WHYNOT” for mugs and beverage sleeves, as well as clothing.
Westbrook’s nickname is Brodie, and he shares it with his brother and his dog. He uses the name on social media and he and his brother refer to themselves as the Brodies. Russell Westbrook Enterprises, Inc. also filed a trademark application for “THE BRODIE,”
“BEAT THE BRODIES,” and “BRODIES” for different types of clothing and athletic apparel. They also applied for a trademark registration for “BEAT THE BRODIES” and “BRODIES” for entertainment services like providing visual and audio performances and video media programs.
In 2012, Westbrook founded the Russell Westbrook Why Not? Foundation to help provide resources for underserved communities. The foundation helps by providing educational opportunities, mental health resources, employment opportunities, and workforce development. The foundation also administers his youth basketball camp. In relation to his foundation, Russell Westbrook Enterprises, Inc. has filed a trademark application for a logo for the foundation, for “RUSSELL WESTBROOK WHY NOT? FOUNDATION” and “WHY NOT? FOUNDATION” for different forms of advocacy like promoting public awareness of social issues, charitable fundraising services, and basketball camps and services associated with them.
Westbrook is also involved in movie production. He produced “Tulsa Burning: The 1921 Race Massacre” which aired on the History Channel and was nominated for three Emmys. He also produced “Passion Plays: Russell Westbrook” which aired on Showtime, and worked with Sony’s Incubation Lab on “Why Not?,” a short film that opened BET’s Black Film Friday series. Russell Westbrook Enterprises, Inc. has filed a trademark application for a logo that is a stylized “W” for video and film production related to his movie projects.
Westbrook is the founder and creative director of his own clothing line, Honor the Gift, which includes collections like “Concrete Jungle,” “Inner City Love,” “Inner City Love Kids,” and “City of Angels.” Russell Westbrook Enterprises, Inc. filed a trademark application for “HONOR THE GIFT INNER CITY” for an array of clothing items. It also applied for a trademark for a flag-style logo for online retail store services, different styles of bags, a diverse selection of clothing items, and jewelry, all related to his clothing brand.
