Keenan Allen is a wide receiver for the Los Angeles Chargers and a five-time Pro Bowler.
Keenan Alexander Allen was born in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1992, and he comes from a very athletic family. He was teammates with both his half-brother, Zach Maynard, and cousin, Maurice Harris, in high school and college. Both Maynard and Harris would also end up playing in the NFL.
Allen was an outstanding athlete in high school, where he played football, basketball, and ran track. He received accolades for all three sports, but for football, he was named a 2009 High School All-American. He was invited to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, where he had a punt return and a kick return, each for 33 yards during the game.
Allen was a talented player on both sides of the ball, however, he was considered to be one of the best defensive backs in the nation. He initially committed to Alabama to play for the Crimson Tide but would flip his commitment to the University of California, Berkeley. His reason for going to USC was that going there would give him the opportunity to play wide receiver, as well as be on the same team as his half-brother.
For three years, Allen was the starting wide receiver for the University of California, Berkeley. As a true freshman, he played in eleven games for the Golden Bears and recorded 490 receiving yards and five touchdowns. As a sophomore, Allen recorded 1,343 receiving yards and six touchdowns and was named First-Team All-Pac-12. During his junior season, which would be his final season at the school, he recorded 2,570 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns. He is ranked third in all-time school history, for single-season receiving yards. Both Allen and his half-brother, hold the record for the longest pass play in school history, which was a 90-yard touchdown pass from Maynard to Allen in a game against the Washington Huskies.
Although Allen was invited to the NFL Combine that year, he did not participate to allow himself time to recover from a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) sprain which occurred during the previous season. However, he did opt to run routes at his school’s Pro Day a month later to increase his draft stock. He would go on to be drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Chargers.
Allen struggled in training camp and during the early part of the season. He even began to question his future in the sport. However, an injury to another player forced him to have more playing time, and soon he would have a breakout game against the Philadelphia Eagles, catching for more than 100 yards and a touchdown. That year he led all rookies in receptions, ending the season with 1,046 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Allen started in 14 of the 15 games that he played in that season, and he also became the second rookie in NFL history to have more than 100 yards and two touchdowns in a playoff game. He was named NFL Rookie of the Year by Sporting News and Pepsi NEXT NFL Rookie of the Year.
In Allen’s second season, he would start in all 14 games that he played in and recorded 783 receiving yards and four touchdowns. The next year, he only played in eight games due to a kidney injury, but he would still record 725 receiving yards and four touchdowns.
In 2016, the Chargers signed him to a four-year contract extension. He tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the first half of the week one game and did not play for the rest of the 2016 season.
Allen returned in the 2017 season and started in 15 of 16 games. He recorded 1,393 receiving yards and six touchdowns. He was voted to the Pro Bowl and named NFL Comeback Player of the Year. He was also ranked 41 on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2018.
In 2018, Allen recorded 1,196 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns, which helped his team to the divisional round of the playoffs, where they lost to the New England Patriots. During the following season, he recorded 1,199 yards and six touchdowns. His 104 receptions that season would be recorded as a franchise record. In 2020, Allen signed another four-year deal with the Chargers. That year he recorded 992 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, and in 2021, he had 1,138 receiving yards and six touchdowns. He was voted to the Pro Bowl in each of these years.
