Joe Burrow is a professional football player in the National Football League. He is the starting quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals. He played college football at Ohio State University and Louisiana State University where he won the national championship.

The son of football coach Jim Burrow and his wife Robin, Joseph Lee Burrow was born on December 10, 1996, in Ames, Iowa. He comes from a family with a strong association with college sports. Both of his grandfathers played basketball in the SEC, while his uncle played football there. His two older brothers also played collegiate football at Nebraska, where his father had once coached football. Burrow’s brothers would play on the defensive side of the ball as their father, Jim Burrow was a defensive coach. Jim would eventually become the defensive coordinator at Ohio University, which would relocate the family to Athens, Ohio.

Joe Burrow attended Athens High School where he played both basketball and football. He played quarterback in football and point guard in basketball, where he was honored as first-team all-state. He was named Mr. Ohio Football after leading his team to the state playoffs three years in a row and was just one game short of a perfect record during his senior year. Throughout his high school career, Burrow amassed 2,067 rushing yards, with 27 rushing touchdowns, and 11,416 passing yards with 157 passing touchdowns. He was named the 2014 Gatorade Player of the Year.

Coming out of high school, Burrow was considered the eighth-best quarterback in the country and he committed to play college football at the Ohio State University.

Burrow attended the Ohio State University for three years. He redshirted his freshman year, which was the 2015-2016 season. He was then named the backup quarterback to J. T. Barrett. Burrow only appeared in five games during both his sophomore and junior years, and mostly only in garbage time. He recorded 29 completions and three touchdowns. In a rivalry game against Michigan at the end of Burrow’s junior season, Barrett was injured and replaced by Dwayne Haskins. Haskins performed well and it became obvious that he would become the team’s next starting quarterback.

Burrow decided to transfer to Louisiana State University. Because he completed his degree at Ohio State, during the three years he attended the school, Burrow was able to transfer as a graduate and not have to sit out of football for a year. He chose to transfer from the BIG-10 to the SEC and wanted to play for LSU’s coach, Ed Orgeron.

Burrow, now a redshirt junior with two years of collegiate eligibility was named LSU’s starting quarterback. He had an outstanding game against conference powerhouse Auburn (ranked 7th in the nation at the time), where he recorded 249 passing yards and a touchdown. Then against Ole Miss in conference play two weeks later, he had 292 passing yards and three touchdowns. Both performances earned him SEC Player of the week.

During rivalry week, in what was called the Game of the Year, Burrow played Texas A&M in a seven-overtime loss that saw Burrow record a combined 370 yards and six touchdowns. At the end of the season, the Tigers played in the Fiesta Bowl where Burrow had 394 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. LSU’s team ranked sixth-best in the nation at the end of the season and had a 10-win, three-loss record.

As a redshirt senior, Burrow led the Bayou Bengals to their best statistical season in school history, which culminated in a National Championship win at home in Louisiana. He would have outstanding performances all season long, eventually breaking the LSU single-season passing touchdowns record. In November, Burrow led the Tigers to a victory over top-ranked Alabama, recording 393 yards and three touchdowns. He also led LSU to a victory over Georgia at the SEC Championship, recording four more touchdowns. This secured LSU’s spot in the college football playoffs.

In their first playoff game, LSU beat Oklahoma in the 2019 Peach Bowl. The Tigers also defeated Clemson to win the 2020 National Championship Game and Burrow was named the MVP of the game. His 60 touchdowns that season set an FBS record. He won the Manning Award, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, Walter Camp Award, Lombardi Award, Davey O’Brien Award, Maxwell Award, and the Heisman Trophy. Many consider his senior season at LSU to be the greatest season of collegiate football ever played.

Burrow was taken first in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. His rookie season started off very promising and his stats were impressive. Burrow was considered likely to be named Offensive Rookie of the Year but a shoulder injury, which required surgery, prematurely ended his season. In his second NFL season, he started all 16 games and had 36 touchdowns with 14 interceptions. He threw for 4,611 yards and rushed for 118. He led his team to the Super Bowl, where they lost to Los Angeles Rams. In doing so, Burrow ended a three-decade playoff drought that had been the longest in major sports in North America.
