Aaron Donald is a defensive tackle for the Los Angeles Rams in the National Football League. He is a seven-time Pro Bowler and a three-time AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
Aaron Charles Donald was born on May 23, 1991, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was raised in the Lincoln–Lemington–Belmar neighborhood with his two older brothers. He went to Penn Hills High School, where he played defensive tackle and offensive guard. He had 11 sacks and 63 tackles (15 for loss) during his senior year. He was rated as a three-star prospect and attended the University of Pittsburgh. He was named a starter and had a stand-out year his sophomore year. He had 11 sacks, one forced fumble, and 47 tackles (16 for loss and received second-team All-Big East honors. The next year, he had 5.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and 64 tackles (18.5 for loss), and received first-team All-Big East honors. As a senior he had 11 sacks, four forced fumbles, and 59 tackles (28.5 for loss), winning him ACC Defensive Player of the Year, the Chuck Bednarik Award, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Lombardi Award, and the Outland Trophy.
The St. Louis Rams drafted Donald in the first round of the 2014 draft. He was the thirteenth overall pick. Donald started in his third game in the NFL, against the San Francisco 49ers, and he had four tackles. He had nine sacks, two forced fumbles, and 47 tackles his rookie season and was voted to the Pro Bowl, named to the NFL All-Rookie Team, and won the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
The next season he was named Defensive Player of the week twice and voted to a second Pro Bowl. He had 11 sacks, one fumble recovery, and 69 tackles. He was named 14th on the NFL Top 100 Players List. In his third season, he had several stellar games including one against the Cardinals, for which, he was awarded NFC Defensive Player of the Week. He was named to his third Pro Bowl that year. In 2017, he recorded 11 sacks, five forced fumbles, and 41 tackles and was named Defensive Player of the Year. He was voted to another Pro Bowl and was listed as seventh on the NFL Top 100 Players List. He was briefly the highest-paid defensive player in history during 2018 after signing a $135 million, six-year deal with his team. He led the league with 20.5 sacks for the regular season. He was named the Defensive Player of the Year and played in the Super Bowl, although his team lost. He was named the number one player on the NFL Top 100 Players List. In 2019, he had 12.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and 48 tackles, earning him another trip to the Pro Bowl and his 5th First-team All-Pro honors. He was listed as third on the NFL Top 100 Players List. In 2020, he recorded 13.5 sacks and 45 tackles. He was named to his seventh Pro Bowl and listed as second on the NFL Top 100 Players List.
Donald graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2020 with a degree in communications. Forbes named him as number forty on their World’s Highest-Paid Athletes list in 2021. He has endorsement deals with Dick’s Sporting Goods, Electronic Arts, Panini, and others. In 2019, he made a substantial investment in start-up company Ready Nutrition and he also has additional real estate investments.
He filed a trademark application for “AD99 Solutions Foundation” for the purpose of fundraising and administering charitable contributions. The AD99 Solutions Foundation was started by Donald in 2019 to help the underserved youth in Pittsburgh. The foundation administers the Prep Forward Program which helps to holistically prepare select African American student-athletes in Allegheny County to prepare for higher education and success in real-world settings. The foundation has also helped to provide food for summer programs, distributed masks and gloves throughout their community, provided a virtual education series for student-athletes and administers a youth football skills camp.
Donald also obtained a federal trademark registration for “AD99” to be used on clothing and athletic apparel, some of which can be found on his online store and some of which are used to promote his foundation.
In 2020, he obtained a federal trademark registration for “Living in the Pocket,” to be used on clothing and athletic apparel. This is mostly apparel that is given away at and sold to support the foundation’s Living in the Pocket Youth Football Skills Camp.
Aaron Donald is one of the most decorated and respected defensive players in football history and is still an active player. He is married to Erica Sherman and has two children from a previous relationship. He lives in Calabasas, California and his net worth is around $40 million.
