What is an Office Action?

Once the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) receives a trademark application, the application is thoroughly reviewed by an experienced trademark-examining attorney. If the examining attorney finds that the mark is too similar to an already-applied for mark, finds the need to issue a substantive refusal for registration (such as the mark is generic or descriptive), or finds a technical error in the application, he or she will issue an Office Action.

Office Actions should be taken very seriously. Every Office Action the USPTO issues requires a response within six months time, otherwise the application associated with the Office Action will be abandoned.
